Last count there was about ~1.3 billion Catholics (back in 2021), not counting other denominations that recognise the Pope. As far as moral authorities go there aren't many that have that much sway.
Just because lots of fools are fooled by an illegitimate moral authority doesn't give the authority any moral legitimacy.
For proof of this, I remind you that half of America trust Trump, and you wouldn't call Trump trustworthy would you?
Legitimate or not, that's 1.3+ billion people that now need to agree with us that Trump is evil. I'd rather have that than the opposite, wouldn't you?

But you're right it would be good to see some consensus from other non-religious moral authorities.
If conservatives become chastized by the Pope for unchristian behavior, they will not abandon unchristian behavior. They will reject the Pope.
