Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

It is what every industry always does. The Italian guy playing a Native American crying on the side of the road about trash was just an industry trope to pass trash pollution on to citizens.

On its website, KAB says it was "formed in 1953 when a group of corporate and civic leaders met in New York City to bring the public and private sectors together to develop and promote a national cleanliness ethic." These "corporate and civic leaders" were members of wealthy packaging and beverage companies, including American Can Company, Owens-Illinois Glass Company, Coca-Cola, and Dixie Cup.

It's never, "hey we're going to stop running our giant planet-killing industrial plants," it's, "we're just going to tell you to use your sink less and buy a new machine from us and then the planet will be cool."

There are these TV commercials about dishwasher soap lately, telling you to use them as often as you want because they use less water than washing dishes in the sink.

Fun stuff about that lie:

  • Their fine print, IIRC, claims sink-washing uses 26 gallons of water.
  • In that scenario, they expect the way one washes dishes in the sink is to run the water the whole time, not storing the water in the sink

That was the whole idea behind: "What's your carbon footprint?"

Bitch we been trying, and you're just cramming shit we don't want down our throats like AI and Crypto to make sure the minerals under our dirt keep making you profit even if it kills you and everyone you know

What’s wrong with selling meth to children? Nothing! It’s the children’s fault for buying the meth. The guy selling and profiting off it is just doing business.

Am I doing it right? That’s essentially the same argument I am hearing. Victim blaming and profiteering off said victims.
