- Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
- before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
- if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
- Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
- No brigading, either off-site or on-site. An incitement to brigade includes two elements: a call to disruptive action and a specific direction outside of this community in which to take that action. Exceptions include:

Yeah, it’s really weird I believe some individuals subscribe to the community to just simply downvote posts. One guy clicked on my profile and downvoted everything I submitted.
That begs the question, do their hate subscriptions appear in the subscribed feeds of their main Lemmy accounts or do they have dedicated hate Lemmy accounts? ;p
That’s a good question to ask as It sounds like a lot of effort on their part.
The reasons for not using dogs for finding truffles can be used for any training of animals. Including cats at home, if just for their company. No using animals for your own pleasure. If a cat purring on your lap gives you pleasure, you're a bad vegan.
Saying that it's unethical because other people may try and poison your dog can be easily dismissed as people around the world poison other people's dogs for less. It's a fault of the poisoner.
If you watch any of the border security shows and see the dogs working there, they all enjoy their work and are eager for the reward when they find something. Should vegans avoid border controls because of this?
Just to add to your point: My mom's friend trained service dogs and a big part of it is starting with the right dog. The point of the selection process isn't trying to find the most OBEDIENT dog....it's to find ones that LOVE to learn and work. A dog who doesn't like to "work" can't be forced to do it*. So yes if the dog has a job, it probably loves it.
Training a smart dog is the most compassionate thing you can do for them. They love to feel smart and they love the praise they get for it.
- If you're wondering what happens to the smart dogs who don't like to work...someone gets to adopt a perfect dog that's already trained in the basics.
