Announcing FediMeteo – Weather in the Fediverse!

Weather has always influenced our lives: from agriculture to outdoor activities, to extreme events that, thanks to modern technology, can now be predicted with greater reliability. Personally, weather plays a significant role in my daily decisions, which is why I decided to create a service tailored for the Fediverse.

FediMeteo uses Open-Meteo data to publish updates every 6 hours, including current weather conditions, forecasts for the next 12 hours, and predictions for the upcoming days. Each country is served by its own dedicated instance (e.g., it.fedimeteo.com for Italy), managed through snac to ensure simplicity and efficiency in publishing.

You can follow FediMeteo directly in the Fediverse (on Mastodon and compatible platforms), via RSS, or by visiting the dedicated page for your city (e.g., fr.fedimeteo.com/paris).

Currently supported countries include:
Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands – with many more regions coming soon!

FediMeteo is hosted on a FreeBSD-based VPS, with each country isolated in its own jail to ensure security and scalability.

Visit the main site to explore the national instances and start following your local weather updates today:
https://fedimeteo.com

Happy weather monitoring to all! 🌦️

FediMeteo is dedicated to my grandfather, who every evening would give me the weather forecast based on TV, radio, and his personal experience. He would convince me that the weather would be bad, so he had an excuse to accompany me to school instead of me going alone.

@stefano @admin Dedication for grandpa means a lot. I guess many, many of us have anecdotes about relationships with grandparents. They play a key role in constructing ourselves. Different from parents, but often a key role. I had a special relationship with one of my grandmas. She made me feel like I was special and important too, and would take me with her during her (short) 1day bus journeys in the country with her aged friends. She was important. Will not forget her and what she meant to express about me.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Thank you for sharing your story. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a kid/teenager. Then, I grew up and moved away. In their later years, I didn't call them often. It was some sort of self-protection, as I had assumed they could live forever. Now, I blame myself for that one call I could have made - but didn’t.

@[email protected] @[email protected] I’ll tell you something : we all surely have done the same, putting our interests in our own life which is to be constructed, putting focus on studies, work, loved ones, and then realizing we should have had much more time with them when then were with us.

This is common, yet it’s a hard feeling. They also may have done the same during their own youth.

To quote a song from Joe Cocker “every generation has its way, a need to disobey”. Song is titled “n’oubliez jamais” if remembered correctly.

Yep, here it is :

@[email protected] @[email protected] the admin account is a good move. Especially if it stops my phone pinging every time you update this post 😉

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] that's the main reason why I created it. I didn't want to spam people (and almost DoS the BSD Cafe) with the updates 😉

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] Oh, that's cool. Add Bergen, Norway to the list of suggestions :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] Sure, I'm extending the support. Norway will be created in the coming days

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] Non è possibile fare in modo che sia l'utente a scrivere il nome della città? io abito in un paese

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] Needs more Canada. 🙃

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] Any plans to add the US at some point? I miss getting all my weather from the bird site and have been attempting to reproduce something similar here on Mastodon.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] yes, I'm planning to set a new VPS in your continent, so it will have less latency. I'm planning to test and complete Europe in the coming days, then I'll probably start with your continent

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] I am a laid off Sys Admin and self described weather nerd if you need help with testing or anything else.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] thank you! Bookmarking your post

@[email protected] Very nice, just strange to see that it's going to be sunny in Leiden in the middle of the night 😉!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] Yes, the bot considers 'sunny' when it's 'clear.' Well, let's put it this way: if it were daytime, it would have been sunny 😆

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] Super nice, thank you Stefano. Don't forget 🇨🇭 "Danke!" §8-)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] Sure. The problem is: which language should I use there? 😉

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] LOL, you're right, hahaaa...I speak 3 of 4, but for the sake of neutrality, maybe english? 😇

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] yes, I was considering English because of this reason - I'll probably go with English

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] This is very cool. I've been learning a ton from reading this!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected]

I found the Birmingham UK link and followed by doing a Mastodon search for:

At Birmingham At UK dot fedimeteo dot com

Hopefully time will pass to start receiving your posts :))

Equally hopefully it will let me get the weather on Mastodon without it being the Met Office cross posting from Twitter :))

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] perfect. You should receive the message as soon as the next update cycle will be over (for UK, it should be more or less in one hour from now)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] ok - now it shows fine so maybe traffic load 🙂

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

@[email protected] Sure I'm doing something wrong? Searched for @[email protected] but nothing is found... fwiw @aberdeen does work in uk so it must be reading specific

@[email protected] I suppose large countries are quite a scale challenge at this stage, but whenever you add Brazil, happy to help with any translation work

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@[email protected] would it be possible to add Ipswich, Chelmsford and Colchester to the UK list of cities/towns?
