Another idea I'm playing with: a fediverse starter pack.

The really cool thing is that @[email protected] lets you create a "remix" without needing an account, so you can go ahead and make a temporary starter pack that expires after 5 days.

Or you can sign up and save it forever.

It will even work on the free plan!

@[email protected] Glad you think so!

I've been really enjoying working with @[email protected], pretty much all of my recent side projects are made with it.

And I love that 11ty projects can run on the free @[email protected] plan.

I think I am going to get a lot of use out of this setup.

So one problem I have is with usernames that don't match the domain they're on, eg @ user @ domain.com, who has an account at https://mastodon.domain.com/@user.

Any idea how to go about that?

I made this one to promote fellow #musicians, but I put in the effort to make it easy to copy and customize, see the project's README file.

@[email protected] This is an awesome idea! Just to be extra clear (mind my paranoia lol), we can take your basic starter kit and replicate it ourselves for anything else?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

@[email protected] Yes, absolutely!

Just consider this as a bit of an experiment, sort of a replacement for Google Sheets that some people use for this purpose.

It would be best to check with the folks if they're okay to be added to such a list, as they don't really get notified, which is something I am looking into next.

I am also noticing an issue when adding accounts with some non-standard Mastodon servers, so if you see a blank space, that will be likely the reason.

Hope this helps!

@[email protected] Oh this is absolutely more than helpful!! Thank you so much for the deeper explanation and tips, I'm quite excited to try replicating one. Bsky's starter kits are one of the few things it's doing well, imo!

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] it'd be cool if you could sign in w/ your mastodon account and click 'follow all' or something

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

@[email protected] I like the idea! It would be a bit tricky to keep the project remixable on Glitch though.

But this gave me an idea on how to fix an issue* I just found.

Maybe it's enough to add a field where you can put your home server, and it will update all the links to open on it?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

@[email protected] does mastodon have endpoints you can hit that'll follow an account if you're signed in on the server already. For example, if they entered their server, could you have a follow button that links to: mastodon.social/@[email protected]/follow

And when you click it, it opens and follows the user? I feel like that was a thing on Twitter, but I might be imagining things

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

@[email protected] I think I'm just going to keep things simple for the time being.

I think having the field to put in your home server on the page helps already. And it's saved for your next visit!

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] I love this. The idea has been rattling around my head for two or three weeks.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] This is really cool. I think there’s so much that can be done with this. It might be useful to offer a CSV file to download that people can mass import so they don’t need to click every single link.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] You would have to emphasize the importance of “merge” instead of “overwrite” in whatever you do, since the import is pretty close to a destructive action.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Luckily that seems to be the default, but definitely worth stressing this, thank you!

@[email protected]

I’ve seen this on other welcome to madto things and it really bothers me:

Stop suggesting people join mastodon.social

SO MANY other instances (including mine) have it either limited or outright blocked because it’s so badly moderated, that a newbie is going to have such a skewed view. And so many newbies fall off and onto other platforms like bluesky because that’s easier than switching instances.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

@Alien_[email protected] Very fair point, and typically I avoid that, but I've been having some thoughts about the whole "too hard to pick a server" thing recently and how to best address that.

I won't get into it much here, but for the time being, I'm just going to switch out the link for instances.social.

Thank you for calling this out!

@[email protected] Nice work! 🙂👍 Your demo kicked off a conversation in the WeDistribute Matrix room, where it turns out a number of people have also been working on similar things. (My own design notes look like this: https://stuff.jfietkau.me/starter-packs) Some of us are now trying to maybe join forces.

@[email protected] Thank you!

Very detailed notes, and some things I've also been thinking about as well!

And thanks for notifying me, I will have to catch up on there.
