Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to get your wish as its fully open source and the servers can be self-hosted quite easily. Unlike Telegram, where only the actual end client was open source and the server side was closed source. In SimpleX everything is open source.
Hackliberty is one of the most active SimpleX groups
