Hi, I'm four babies in a trenchcoat. My interests include grown-up things like businessing and adulting. I am definitely an adult. Ignore the first sentence.

Vincent Adultman :-)

Hi! I'm not just a Reddit refugee, but an everything refugee. Or at least, that's how it feels. I've been online since the mid-80s, and I've seen platform after platform be acquired and burnt down under me. I'm pretty much used to it by this point.

That doesn't mean I like it.

I'm an old-time geek. Huge bibliophile, particularly fond of old science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, children's books, YA, classics, and humor. Oh, add graphic novels and manga to the list. I'm also a long time tabletop RPG player and GM. My system of choice is the Avalon Hill edition of RuneQuest 3; my RQ site might be the oldest one still existing. Of course I play other systems as well. I'm into deep role-playing, and would definitely like to find people who are interested in that sort of thing!

My primary activity over on Reddit was recommending books. I have a resource of nearly a thousand book recommendations that I have created over the years. Hoping to be able to make recommendations on Lemmy, too.

What else? I'm a pretty good public speaker, and was an invited program participant (i. e. panelist) at a regional New England science fiction convention for over 25 years. I'm an atheist, but I advocate tolerance and understanding between atheists and theists (and yes, I've done panels on that topic too; they were great).

I was a redhead when I had hair, with a redheaded son. I'm the single divorced father of a newly-adult son. I'm currently unattached. Oh, and I'm apparently demisexual.

I live in Massachusetts, USA. I like cats, cooking, walking, and well-written TV and movies. I've been refining my grilling techniques for about 35 years now, on a lifelong quest to make the perfect burger.

Hi, im a redditor. Probably won't be for long though.

Im a c# and typescript developer, computer enthusiast, avid book and comic reader, and a fantasy and scifi fan. Im very introverted and agoraphobic, unskilled at social stuff, badly overweight and less-than-optimally-active, and just started on anti-depressants. Other than that im an utterly boring person.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Ahhhh I know the pain bud, I've struggled with that myself as well, in a better spot than I was though still a bit of derp. Felt like I was a complete snoozefest of a person and that I was pretty unlikeable, depression is a total bitch like that.

Don't mean you're a boring person though, like it seems you enjoy a nice mix of stuff and there ain't no shortage of folk on here who dig things like programming, comics, etc as well on here and folk are pretty chill and welcoming from what I've seen so far too.

Credit where credit is due though, its a really difficult thing trying to live your life with depression hanging over you, but hey you've still gone and made a post and are starting on anti-depressants, these are some pretty awesome big steps even if they don't particular feel like it right now :)

I'm yet another reddit refugee. Just wanted everyone to know that there's a combination emoji for a bee wearing a cowboy hat:

🤠 Beehaw brother

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I hope you know this emoji has made it to the Discord 🤭 Welcome to Beehaw!

Heya everyone. Found this place when I was looking for Reddit alternatives after getting the shut down message in Apollo. Checked the list of alternatives on a subreddit and was immediately grossed out by transphobic sites and fucking VOAT of all places being in the list, so randomly running into this place after that was very relieving.

Big into tabletop RPGs, started with Pathfinder 1st edition a long time ago but have mostly been playing D&D 5th edition with some sprinklings of OSR and PbtA-influenced games (well, game, singular. Blades in the Dark is super fun though!) Like most tabletop fans probably, I'm also into fantasy/sci-fi media.

Happy weekend!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

voat's been dead for years. it was a great place to troll the losers there though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Looks like there are quite a few people into TTRPGs around here! Maybe we should have an LFG community?

Hello there! I'm Smiley, lovely to meet you all. (✿◡‿◡)

Like a lot of new people here I'm a Reddit refugee. I've always been a lurker so making posts and commenting is rather daunting, though from what I've seen this community is really nice. :D
I look forward to posting my art, photography and cat pics! 🎨📸🐈💖

Yo!

Software developer and gamer. Started on the Commodore 64 with both and never stopped.

Having been through several tech enshittification cycles, I've long been wondering when Reddit would be too "meh" for me. That happened earlier this week, when I decided that Lemmy was more the tech and community I was looking for. Planned to leave gracefully during June.

Then I saw the AMA and... That set off my "Fuck This Shit with a Vengeance" so currently coding up a script to make my Reddit account die very ungracefully.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I too started on C64! Though in my case it was as late as '92 when a seven year young kid got an already old C64 with cassette player, a manual, and no games. Sometimes one gotta make ones own fun, literally.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Here from Reddit (Apollo user).

I am a HS Biology teacher with a previous career in game development. Very involved in gamification and VR in education (creating in VR, the apps that can be used in a classroom are lacking at the moment).

If it dates me, I had a Digg account back in the day and have spent more time on MySpace than Facebook.

Hi, I'm an architect and I eat too much mayonnaise. Used to be on reddit and forums and bbses and I found my way here. I love reading scifi but I wasn't too active on reddit because of the enders game brownshirts. It's nice being here

Hey guys I made a post. This is my first post and will probably be making more posts if the vibe is right.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I dunno if I really qualify as a "Reddit refugee" as I wasn't particularly active there...a few dozen posts, a few hundred comments, all now deleted. But it was the current reddit mess that got me looking around for other communities and finding Lemmy & Beehaw. I've been online and in various communities since basically forever (Usenet, Puppy [the easier version of Fido to run on a first-generation PC], MajorBBS, CompuServe, The WELL, IRC, etc. etc.) but I promise to try not to play the "get off my lawn" card too often.

I had a medley of jobs for the most part in the tech space, and I've been happily retired for a few years now, because my DW has a good job with a BigCo and I prefer keeping the house clean to writing more code for other people. These days I mostly just try to get outside and hike as much as I can, but I like having at least a tiny bit of online community available.

Politically I lean pretty far to the left, having spent a chunk of my youth fairly active in anarchist circles. These days I'm more of a pragmatist who just wants people to be nice to each other.

It's possible that someone will recognize this username from elsewhere, in which case: yes, it's me, and no, I don't feel like discussing things from decades in the past.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Hey guys, I am another one of the reddit refugees. I mostly used reddit to look at memes, get news about the us economy, view world news, and stay in the loop with gaming news. I can't wait to find new communities to join and experience the joy of a social media site in its infancy. Even on reddit, it seemed like all of the cool stuff was the early years of the site. Hopefully I can witness the famous or infamous posts this site will produce.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Hey everyone! Thought I'd add to the ever growing pile of Reddit refugees. In all seriousness I have been watching in horror at how reddit has been declining over the last few years and the 3rd party app debacle has finally forced me out into what seems a much healthier and happier community. Can't wait to get to chat to you all!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi I'm gabuwu, aka gabe. I am a 22 year old gay jewish dude and enjoy reading and knitting and crochet! as well as gaming. I also love cats!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Here's a crochet community that could use some traffic!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Hey there. I'm yet another redditor that has joined lemmy today to see what the world looks like beyond the walls of the pile of crap that my former digital home has turned into. Still learning how things work around here but definitely like the general vibe of things.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Hello I'm a nonbinary/masc leaning lil guy. I work with high risk populations at a non profit in the pnw. Feels weird to not be a programmer or something, seems that's what all the bee-hawers and fediverse users are into these days. Um, I'm autistic and have adhd, in my mid 30s, like to ride my bike, play pikmin bloom, garden, and take up hobbies quickly and then leave them for like 3 years. Oh I am also a really yuge music nerd, like, actually. Mmmmmmmyeap

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Hi! I'm a trans woman who likes for the most part gaming stuff and programming(said every Redditor trans woman ever!)

I also like:

  • Music (Mostly metal and progressive rock, with some pop on the side). I'm also learning to play the guitar.
  • Animals, especially cats and dogs, in that order 😼
  • Transformers, been an important part of my early childhood.
  • Reading, though I haven't been able to really get into that hobby yet
  • Watching TV, for the most part animation, Star Wars, and some others. Favorite series, in no order: Gravity Falls, The Owl House, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Transformers Prime, Clone Wars
  • Movies are cool too. From the top of my head I like Nobody, the first Monty Python(haven't watched the others), Lord of the Rings(recently watched Two Towers for the first time, gonna watch Return of the King soon), Into/Across The Spiderverse, all Star Wars movies except sequels and most of the Disney Rennaisance stuff. I used to like Marvel movies but I got burnt out.
  • Favorite videogames of all time include: Titanfall 2, Portal 2, Kirby Superstar Ultra, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Sonic Mania, Earthbound, Mother 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Celeste, and some others I may have forgotten.

Can I use really bad introduction line?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I don't have to but:

Hi I'm Plactagonic and I have slight issue with alcohol...

Right now I don't have any.

Sorry this bad joke pops in my mind every time somebody wants to introduce me.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

My dad joke variation of this is to say...

"I may have a drinking problem"

"I don't know how to hold the bottle!"

Its gotten a few groans of anguish but then that seems par for the course with my humour :p

Hey everyone! I’m excited to be here. I’m still learning how everything works but I look forward to the future! I have a question though, if I’m interested in, say, working out, I can’t seem to find any communities. Does anyone know of where I can find a workout community, or do I need to join a different instance outside of beehaw?

Hi! :)

Like so many others, I came from Reddit and I'm gonna stay here. It's nice.

I'm somewhere between 30 and 40, a writer and full time nerd from Germany, I stream and game, I paint and draw and I have two wonderful cats. I like pen & paper rpgs, games in general (except horror), reading, knitting, crocheting, animals, manga, comics, music and listening to the same song on repeat. Also, I probably forgot something.

Thanks for having me here!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I haven't posted yet, I guess I made an account on a different thing but it looks like I can still post here. Hope that's okay! You all seem so welcoming and kind.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I made an account on a different thing but it looks like I can still post here. Hope that's okay

Not only is it okay, it appears to be one of the key benefits to federated networks. Welcome fellow newbie.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I'm here from reddit like everyone else. Software developer who likes building PCs, retro computers, sffpc, water-cooling.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Hi everyone! I didn't actually use Reddit much, but all of a sudden everyone on Mastodon started talking about Lemmy and I thought I'd check it out.

I'll mostly use this account to talk about TTRPG stuff and the creative interests that I have around that, since this is the name I generally go by online when I talk about those things. I've managed to accumulate a lot of neglected hobbies - I'm trying to get better at drawing, I'm very much a self-taught beginner at linocut printing, I've dabbled in bookbinding and want to do more. In terms of TTRPGs I like a bit of everything, especially on the indie side, but lately I've been most interested in Into the Odd style rules light games and solo games.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Hi! In an effort to not be a lurker, I’m going to introduce myself. I’m mid thirties, product manager by trade, dog person who recently came to have a cat when a kitten wandered into my house two weeks ago. Cis male. Bad at posting. Excited to see where this goes!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Former Digg / Redditor, glad to be a Lemming? Do we have a term yet? Ex video game developer, avid gamer and dog lover. Currently a freelance video editor. Really enjoying the vibe here and with Mlem it’s been more a less lateral move for me from Apollo. I don’t mind how new Mlem is and it’ll be fun to see the changes pop up day to day. Keep up the good work everyone!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Well, I tried introducing myself via kbin and I was going to reply to that introduction since I have now been accepted to beehaw...but I can't find that reply in this thread. So I'll write again!

I work in media (behind the scenes...but I also have a few podcasts on the go and I blog), I have epilepsy, and I like to talk about all sorts of subjects. I'm doing a poor job summarizing myself so I'll just copy/paste from my Mastodon page (with some redactions):

Writer/podcaster; fan of books, podcasts, hockey, baseball, curling & movies. Regional Traffic Manager for [REDACTED]. Views & opinions are my own.

I was also diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 35 (4 years ago, now). Sometimes I talk about that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Hi! I'm Peppe, just your average end user with a little bit of poltiical conscience

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Glad to see that I am not the only one a bit lost but excited with this transition from reddit.

Hopefully this fediverse-thing will be way better and more resilient than everything past.

I was finally able to subscribe to other instances. YAY!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Hi, I'm Pallas/retronautickz. I can't consider myself a refugee, even though I use(d) Reddit, because I'm not new to the fediverse and it wasn't the Reddit API changes that made me decide to try Lemmy, but rather wanting to try out other forms of federated social networks other than the one I already use (mastodon)

About me? I'm 29, vegan, queer, neurodivergent and disabled. My interests are languages, both learning and conlanging, and anything vintage (my username being a reference to this). If my profile picture isn't clue enough, I'm a big fan of classical music (and I've been since I was a little kid), but I love music in general and I'm open to listen/discover new artists and genres/styles.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I'm modifier, and until yesterday, reddit was my only social network-ish thing, and where I wasted much of the last 10 years.

My 30s are in my rear view mirror but feel closer than they appear.

I am married to my best friend, I work in travel and travel a lot for work and fun, I am sexually adventurous, intellectually curious, and musically promiscuous.

A number of cats live with me and graciously accept my offerings of food and adoration. When I'm not adoring them, I'm either reading, playing video games, or doing something related to maps or flags, though I've found that adoring cats is an activity that stacks well with many other activities.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

G'day all, Dalek_Thal here, having walked through a door to a new dimension by doing midichlorians.

Definitely looking forward to what Lemmy brings, my hope is that I'll get my old subreddits back, given time.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Hello, I'm green_witch!

I'm a travel-weary drifter from the festering ruins of "that place", where I spent most of my time lurking.

I enjoy herbalism, mycology, bushcraft, botany, nature, and consider myself a student therein. I'm unfortunately pretty timid, and my grasp on language is tenuous at best, but I'm trying to open up more and (hopefully) be a part of a community.

I hope we can all treat each other well and make something neat together.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Hi! I'm a nonbinary (they/them/theirs) programmer and actor. I left Reddit recently and am having a nice time on Beehaw being gay and having good conversations with people. This community has been a great way for me to get started in the fediverse. Thanks for having me!

I enjoy cooking, fighting games, live music, Vampire: The Masquerade and my cat Izzy.

Hello from jerboa on Android! Another reddit refugee, former digg refugee ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Sounds like you've been through a lot. I hope you find a home in these communities. I'm hoping to stay here for a long time as a fellow reddit refugee myself.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I've almost signed up for this a few time but never felt the need to complete the sign up since there was always reddit... but now I'm starting to doubt reddit will survive unharmed. So here I am.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Hi i'm L. I've been on reddit since 2012 and would like an alternative! I used to use chatrooms a lot as a kid (don't worry I stayed safe!) and am kinda looking for that camaraderie again :)))) Big pop culture nerd

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I’m a Reddit refugee who met my future husband on Reddit 13 years ago. It feels weird to be leaving.
