I've been watching For All Mankind and it got me thinking about networking in space... TTLs, 64k packets, transmission mediums, etc. As a 'network generalist,' I find more and more niches to deep dive into... If you specialize in a certain networking niche, what is it? Would you consider networking in space?

If I had a niche in networking that I specialize in, it would be 'border security.' It makes me laugh that everyone in security markets zero trust and CASB and says networks are 'borderless' - it's just not true. I am constantly dealing with borders between 'fabrics' and locations. Maybe I'm just a dullard, but I see the niche I am working in only become more important as we move to the cloud and distributed networking and security paradigms.

I read somewhere about having a theory to deploy a space craft that was in a orbit that would bring it close to mars and earth on semi regular intivals. With the idea being the craft is a giant hard drive. You upload via laser when its close and downoald on the other end. It does not provide real time comms but instead bulk data transfer capabilities.

I tried googling looking for a ref quickly but could not find it sorry.

Like a sneaker-net, but in space! I like it!

That would be the Mars Cycler, as proposed by Buzz Aldrin. I don't know anything about the data side, but the way you described it makes sense.
