I may go for short term work in either South Korea or Saudi for a few months. Does anybody have any idea, how safe it is to use a VPN as a foreigner in these countries? Worse case scenario, can I use a VPN in a Azure VM and scp torrent downloaded files or something?

i know people who openly use torrents when they're abroad. As long as you remember to turn it off before going back home, it's not your IP that's logged.

if it's to hide what you're downloading from Saudis, because they make patties from journalists or jail activists or behead hundreds of people every year, then maybe you should wait a month to get out to download them

Its mostly just anime, movies, TV and game torrents. I use VPN to pass geo-blocking as well.

There's an ISP level filter against pornography and North Korea related materials, but VPN uses are tolerated in South Korea as far as I'm concerned.

Based on a quick google search vpns are often blocked in Saudi, but it says they are not illegal.

I think they block specific provider so hosting your own should solve the problem.

I think they are legal in Korea since Mullvad hosts vpns in Korea.

Double check on these things but it seems like you are good to go.

No South Korea nodes in Mullvad's server list. Perhaps other providers do? I don't think SK is a popular destination for exit nodes since it has a strong censorship against pornography among others.

There's a selectable node for Korea on Nord and I had no issues with mine while traveling.

Thanks! Your right. I’m thinking of Singapore. My bad.

I spend lots of time in south korea and VPNs are fine to use. I primarily use mine for getting around region blocks or for added privacy when on public networks.
