Find the mute button - usually the second button down on the right - then mark it clearly with a sharpie for the next person.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Unfortunately there are some pump models that don't have a mute button now and the best you can do is retreat to the car and wait it out.

I can think of much better things to do, like keeping a flathead screwdriver handy for stabbing speakers (in Minecraft)

[–] ayyy 20 points 2 months ago

An air can turned upside-down gets cold enough to destroy most speaker cones, leaves no evidence that the machine is malfunctioning and needs repair, and is legal and non-suspicious to carry around in your car.

In Minecraft.

You are performing a public service.

Where the living fuck do petrol pumps have video ads? That's crazy

[–] tenacious_mucus 34 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (7 children)

Shouldnt suprise you but…US. (Possibly other countries) Years ago they started adding video screens to display certain things, so as natural progression goes….there’s a screen so there will be ads. Loud-as-shit video ads that play as soon as you start pumping. And when no one is at the pumps they cycle silent ad slideshows.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago

Damn, audio especially sounds irritating. It seems we can't escape ads these days...

I've seen a few pumps with ads, but only in the form of a sticker or laminated poster advertising premium fuel or some random tat they're selling in the garage shop.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Australian here we got em too but they are rare.

never seen it in my home state but driving through some godforsaken Nebraska you see the worst things you can imagine

Pumps at Westfalen stations in Germany promote their own payment app, and sometimes snacks in their stores. But no audio, and only adds in pics on the screens.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

Yeah I've seen those types of ads, although only as a sticker or poster by the pump

Seems like companies these days would force ads into our dreams if they could

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Here, US, I have seen ones that create fake "news" clips that are just pro-petro-industrial propaganda, not just ads. Like I saw one that claimed that solar energy actually releases more greenhouse gasses than "contemporary" petroleum fuels.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Saw one waxing poetically about how good fracking is.

My favorite ads I've seen are ones that play videos about basic traffic laws.

"When you're out driving, remember, it's illegal to pass on a double yellow line! It's the law!"

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 months ago (5 children)

One of my most upvoted comments in lemmy is me saying I should be allowed to smash those screens if they play ads.

Your function is to pump my fucking gas if you do anything more than that fuck off

Don't see ads at the pumps if you stop using gasoline.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right, you can just see them at the charging station now.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

That's not how charging stations work? 🤷‍♂️

[–] ayyy 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Around me all the charging stations have giant 120” verticals screens constantly playing video ads at max brightness even in the middle of the night, and they’re always arranged in a way that you’re forced to see them even if you’re just passing by the chargers and not using them.

And you just know they are taking advantage of some subsidized energy prices because they’re “green”.

[–] RvTV95XBeo 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My guess is you're seeing the L2 chargers outside a grocery store or some such. Those charge so slowly you aren't expected to stick around and look at them, you plug in and do your grocery shopping. If you're looking to charge a significant amount, these are not it.

I've never seen a Level 3 charger with an advertisement. Hell, 90% of the time I have to scour the parking lot to find the charger because they're usually hidden and unlabeled.

Bonus points, if you're fortunate enough to have access to a power outlet where you park, you can usually do 99% of your charging from home, ad free.

Well, that's one point in Tesla's favor then, their chargers have none of that nonsense.

Second button up on the right side is generally the mute button.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I just push the bittons around in a circle motion till I find it

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I accidentally called the attendant for assistance like that once

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Did you ask them to mute that shit?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

80% of the time

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Second buttom from the top right side at least mutes them

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This used to work for my local Circle K's and now does not. Not at a single pump I've tried in the last two years. I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

It's not always the same button. My Circle K doesn't have those big screens thankfully.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Never been able to mute any at speedways. I have tried all the tricks that are posted.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Fork into the speaker works

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

they upgraded the ones near me, haven't found out how to mute them yet.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Works for the old Shell ones.

If QuikTrip ever starts using these you can find me in the local jail after doing some light property damage

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yours doesn't? Every one around me does. There is a mute button, and it has always been labeled, so I just wack mute and look at something else.

[–] starman2112 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Different cities, likely. Please tell me you don't live in Wichita

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

It is, in a idiocracy kind of way.

[–] ruckblack 5 points 2 months ago

I just spam all the buttons, one of them usually mutes it

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Need to print this as a sticker and put it on!

I give those shit places 1 star and never return.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My bicycle doesn’t have any ads.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago
[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

What the fuck? These exist? I haven't been cursed enough to see one.
