“Get an AMS” they said. “You can do multicolor prints. Up to 16!”

Me: What is “color”?

Looks like you need to get a second one!

Cries in AMS Lite.

Mine is full of the same color lol. I just use it as a filament backup so it keeps printing when the others run out

I love this feature too - never having to worry about filament running out and using up the last bit of every spool is so handy.

I never really got over the waste the AMS produces. I love it for the auto load and backup fillament features but multicolor printing needs a few more innovations to be really practical imo.

I love mine specifically for hueforge prints. If you do models that have very few color switches and they are all by layer it doesn't really waste any extra filament than you would by swapping manually.

It's worth it for the dry storage and automatic loading alone. Printing multiple objects one after another on the same bed and same print job, but with different materials is also a great feature and huge time saver for small parts. For actual multi-material prints the best use cases are imo writing into the first layer with a different color or using 2 different non-adhering materials for a thin layer between supports and the part. All of these things require very little filament changes and significantly improve the usage experience.

I have an AMS and love it but I wish it handled color changing like the Mosaic Palette, which melts together filament instead of cutting and purging.

Yeah I’m planning to tweak some settings/code to reduce the waste some, but it will still waste no matter what. It does beat waking up at 3am to change a color by hand though.
