Sometimes they'll give you small trinkets in return, such as for example the town now known as New York.
The Speculaas are totally worth it too!
People still use fashion to advertise their wealth.
All 3 of those are for showing you’re rich.
I'm sure the "proof of wealth" kinda went like:
Ah, so you can afford pants and shirt?
Well how about a fancier shirt?
Yes? Well how about a jaunty hat.
Yes? What about fancy shoe buckles?
Yes? How about stockings?
Yes? Well now I've got a wig beneath my jaunty hat.
That too? How about makeup and perfume then!
Maybe an unnecessary cane. A gold chain sticking out so you know I have a nice watch hidden away. My fanciest kerchief sticking out of my pocket. See how white?
Today, we just post our expensive possessions on social media so you don't have to wear your proof.
Isn’t it marvelous that we live in times where fashion doesn’t play a big role any more? Even jobs that would require ties, say, 20 years ago, are now increasingly casual.
The perception has kinda flipped in twenty years.
Back then you'd wear a suit to project credibility.
Now the suit makes you look untrustworthy.
Disclaimer: Personal perspective and opinion. Not intended to be etched in stone universal fact.
I don’t think that’s true because I find strangers are a lot nicer to me when I wear a suit than they are when I wear a tshirt and jeans.
This mountain of discarded plastic textiles says differently:

In the days before telecommunication and especially before formalized, reliable identification methods clothes were an obvious way to figure out a person's position in society. Expensive clothing was easy to spot when compared to cheaper clothing, so if a person was dressed in finery it was almost guaranteed they were actually wealthy.
It just switched to chinos, polo's, and boat shoes.
They dressed like that to hide the rampant Syphilis at the time.
So much better than the fashion of today.
It's currently 2024 and mullets are in so we clearly haven't progressed much.
