The reason is: by the time the studio said yes, Theron couldn't pass as 20 years younger while being 10 years older in real life.

It could have been like one of those Indian action movies where one actor plays both the main character and that character's father.

I always thought Charlize Theron wasn't susceptible to aging ... so there wouldn't be any need for this.
