Yeah, we know. Basically, shitheads. I’m pretty certain it’s a universal constant.

The ones that don't have cars listen to shitty music on a speaker on a train.

The question was, what KIND of shithead. The authors expected to find it was narcisistic people, but they turned out to be wrong, it was an entirely different kind of shithead. When you are dealing with a shithead, it is important to know what kind of shithead you have on your hands. This is good science.

I think there's a socioeconomic aspect to this too. Growing up poor I thought it was so cool to see ricers with sound systems drive by. I used to browse the local car audio shop looking at the variety of subwoofers I would buy it I could ever afford a car. It wasn't till I was older that I realized how annoying it can be to others, but I still enjoy a good sound system.

My experience is similar I used to appreciate cars with a decent exhaust and went through the same sound system phase. Then I lived on a slight hill on a long street. After a couple of months, some cunt who started work at 5am would frequently drop to a lower gear going down the hill and would wake me up every other week. So this title does not surprise me in the least.

I’m also hearing impaired and sleep without hearing aids. The people who aren’t half deaf must have been in hell. These days I think if your car is over a certain decibel limit, defect notice and impounded if not fixed. Fuck em

People who like loud cars are also people who blast their music in public. Just attention seekers. My ex girlfriend was just like that. I really liked her, but it was really hard to ignore things like: sometimes i pull up to a EV and rev up my engine, to show him. Wonder what they think.
All i could think was that he thought the same as most people, you're an annoying dumbass.

If you read the article, you'll find that they expected the results to show that people were "attention seekers", but in fact they found that they were NOT trying to get attention and manipulate people's view of them the way narcisists do. They don't want attention, they actually want to HURT people. That's a big, big difference.

Makes sense. I wonder if my neighbor with the obnoxiously loud car knows how many people in the apartment complex think he's an annoying douchebag without ever meeting him.

Same.

Anyone who says "loud pipes save lives" is a) indulging in post-hoc rationalization and b) doesn't know how to use their horn.

Or how to stay the hell out of blind spots. When I rode, I was constantly amazed by the numbers of fellow riders who didn't understand that in order to be seen, you have to start by not hiding.

I figured it was more a way to mark their territory, like roosters crowing and dogs barking into the night. That too goes for the people playing loud music. But the study days there are indeed some sadistic tendencies at work so some people find it fun to do this just to annoy others.
