What… are we just a penguin and Apple Trees…

For real, though, I wish Microsoft (mojang does…) cared enough to support Linux for BE.

I just want to mention that I hate that Microsoft seems to think that they own the term "Personal Computer".

[–] [email protected] 27 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (3 children)

Was it Microsoft that "took it" though? I always thought it was Apple that started calling their machines Mac as opposed to PCs (the others) and the term just stuck to Microsoft because, of course, there are only two options /s

If anything, I hate that Apple doesn't call their machines PCs, which they absolutely are.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago

They also don't call their phones... phones, or smartphones even, it's always iPhone.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

historically a "PC" is a machine compatible with the "IBM PC" and the only OS available for that was DOS or later Windows

Of course then Unix-like operating systems started to become available for the same machines, and Apple switched to Intel processors for a while too.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

The term “PC” is derived from the “IBM-compatible Personal Computer”, which basically meant it could run pc-dos and it’s bastard child ms-dos - you guessed it, made by microsoft. Apple computers and many others in those days did not run those shoddy dos (disk operating systems) things, but had real Operating Systems like MacOS, BeOS, Amiga Workbench etc.

There are tricks to launch the Android version on Linux, but Java edition is mostly better anyways

[–] [email protected] 45 points 5 months ago

Java for the win i say.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I didn't know this was a thing. Linux can run android apps?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago

Building a translation layer for Android applications is easier on Linux since their bases are similar. (Android is an operating system based on Linux)

[–] [email protected] 51 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Java edition has always been superior, but only because it hasnt been bastardized by Microsoft. It's a shame the price you pay for that is no crossplatform support.

It's a shame the price you pay for that is no crossplatform support.

If you have a little bit of server management know-how, you can set up https://geysermc.org/, which allows for crossplay between bedrock and java on a java server.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

You at least have crossplatform between Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android (with Pojav Launcher). So not so bad.

[–] whyNotSquirrel 48 points 5 months ago

"you can play on PC".... I know I shouldn't have bought a Linux microwave to play games....

[–] [email protected] 43 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Why not use the Java version? Bedrock sucks anyway. I use ATLauncher to launch the Java edition.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What's even good about Bedrock edition? Been playing since the 1.7.x days, and Java edition has been consistently superior in my view. If nothing else, it's better because the table with the floating book is called the Enchanting Table.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Bedrock has a few unique mechanics (large fish, potion cauldrons, etc.) but is also much more buggy. I've always liked JE more.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

There's probably a mod for that...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Multiple, I think

[–] [email protected] 24 points 5 months ago

Just play Java edition. It's superior, and does support crossplay, no matter what anyone tells you. Officially between Windows, Linux, and MacOS, natively on Android with Pojav Launcher, and with the geyserMC mod, to any device that runs bedrock edition.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 5 months ago

Take a look at [email protected]. An open source version of minecraft.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 months ago

The Extend in EEE doesn't mean they port Microsoft exclusives to other platforms

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

why do you want to play the inferior bedrock version in the first place?
it has missing features and the ones that do work are somewhat buggy.
bedrock has better server netcode tho iirc.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Crossplay with console gamers. We played on Bedrock for a long time until we built the kid's first PC.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It was in Java before, right? How come it doesn't run on linux anymore?

CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago

It's not in the picture, but this is referring to the bedrock version. Officially "Minecraft" referrs to this edition.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

They reimplemented it in C++, funnily enough to port it to more platforms (mobile and consoles).
They do still also develop the Java edition. I don't think, they can afford the shitstorm to deprecate that, as their core fanbase is on that, with all the mods and community servers.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Check Out the PE (pocket edition) launcher. If you have a license on the Google play store at least. It's actually not half-bad, runs smoothly and has the regular amount of m&k as well as controller support

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

tbh it does say "for Windows"

also couldn't some hacking with wine/proton make it run?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I'd like to be able to set my kids up with Bedrock because that's the version most other kids play, and it would be great for them to be able to play on servers together. I have run the Android version on Linux in the past using a community launcher, and it worked flawlessly with a mouse and keyboard. But I think there was an authentication change that prevents that from working anymore. It's very frustrating that they have a Linux version, but they just won't let us use it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

from my experience, most kids play java tho?

mostly it's the only version that:

  1. takes 3 clicks to pirate (not everyone does that, but this is a contributing factor)
  2. available on pc

bedrock is mostly used by mobile (android/ios) players, which makes up a rather small market share

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago

Not if they play on switch, xbox or phone

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

To clarify, the kids that my kids meet at school who want to play Minecraft with them almost exclusively play Bedrock, often on ipads.

One of these days I may get around to trying running a server with GeyserMC which purportedly extends a Java server to let Bedrock users connect.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

It's really not that difficult, you could do it today.

I did try this, and considering I purchased it on Amazon’s store years ago, I know terrible, that launcher you mentioned only supports Google. Amazon also doesn’t have API support for their store unlike Google.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

Lol i was in same boat because I have BE for free from beta days and needed it only to test for GeyserMC clients on my server.

Was too lazy to go android route so I just used my laptop which still had dual boot windows.

Take it that your instance didn’t cache the image? 😂. I deleted the image and post due to me thinking it was a bad post and meme. Turns out, I was wrong lol 😝

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Its just three dots for me

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

I forget what the launcher is called, but for BE I had really good luck with one of the ones you can find on Lutris via the search function
