I have recently decided to quit my very! toxic corporate job and will be unemployed since 1st of May. The job has burned me out completely, I worked in middle management and just need a break to recover from the stress. I know its possible to be on stress sick leave even though I will be on A-kasse. What is your advice? Should I visit the doctor while I am still employed, or is it enough to go there in May, when unemployed? I am able to push through until I leave, but I am sure as hell I won’t have the motivation to start a new job right away, since I am stressed and burned out.

Is it okay to tell that to my doctor? I never mentioned it to my doctor before, that I am stressed and struggling mentally.

What I now want is to get a few weeks off as a stress sick leave so I don’t have to apply for jobs when I am not mentally able to start a new job. Do you have experience with a case similar to mine, or do you know what is the procedure?

I think it’s possible to call your doctor and get a “lægeerklæring”? Just tell your doctor as it is, you’re stressed out and burned out, if your current job need your “lægeerklæring” you can just give that to them. We have rights here in Denmark, it’s not as bad here yet as in many other places! Use every right that still exist to protect your mental health!

If you are stressed, why do you want to continue in your current job?

If you actually think you are stressed, go to a doctor to get diagnosed. From your post it's unclear to be whether you are stressed or simply tired of your workplace.

Go on sick leave immediately if your job has given you burnout. Burnout is serious and you do not want to risk making it worse by pulling through.

Yep call in sick and see your doctor to get their advice. But only get a doctors notice if your work place demand it, and the workplace also have to pay for it. Also talk to your union. Notice that when you have been sick 1 month, the "kommune/jobcenter" will get involved in your case, and you are obliged to answer all calls from them, and join all meetings or your money will be withdrawn. Jobcenter is a pain in the ass. This go for danish citizens, as you are english speaking I just mention this.

There's a pretty harsh time limit for sygedagpenge, because it's a system designed only for simple and clear-cut stuff such as a fractured leg, not for phenomena like chronic illness, disabilities, or indeed mental problems such as stress.

Once you time out of the sygedagpenge-system, you are in the cash help system, and there will be no lube.

So, as much as you reasonably can, without building up even more stress, try to fix your problems before you end up on cash help. Reach out to your union, reach out to your a-kasse, reach out to your physician (praktiserende læge).

I do not want to end up on cash help, what I want is a few weeks of stress sick leave. If that is too complicated to get, I am also opened to being voluntarily unemployed and then just sign up to Akasse when I am ready

I think the time limit for sygedagpenge is something like 7 months, so if you think you only need a few weeks, then you don't need to worry.

Do reach out, though: physician, union, a-kasse.

Go to the doctor. I’ve been in your situation.
