Hello! I am a student in Sonderborg, and i want to bring my 125cc motorbike from Latvia for the last 3 months of the semester. Now, registering it here, as much as i understand will the tax the life out of me, so that’s a no go. Anyone know if i would be able to drive my bike here for 3 months with foreign license plates? I have been in Denmark since septemver, and i called the motor agency, who said that i might be able to get a permit since i’ve been in Denmark for less than a year, anyone have any experience?

I believe you only have to register a motorized vehicle in Denmark if you use it here more than half a year.

Both Latvia and Denmark are part of the European Union. Free movement of goods, services and people.

If you do need to register it, do it with a flex leasing company. Then you will pay about 0,5% of the registration tax for 3 months.

It should be doable, and then some fees for the leasing company for doing the work. Buying out your bike might be an issue as they will require a company to do it, and not you as an individual, but talk to some of them to figure details out.

You are legally not allowed to flex lease your own car/motorcycle.

Lol, of course.

He sells it to the leasing company, and they lease it to him, and sells it back to him.

That’s technically illegal.

I don't really think so. Leasing companies haven't complained about it to me before.

It's not mine when I sell it, law is abided. Move on.

You added that link after I replied to you.

And so what?

Main thing it being a riskless engagement. Normally you would makes regular transactions, to show a regular purchase at market prices, and risk assesment towards the customer.

I would imagine that is why I have had contracts with a similar scenario, except the riskless engagement.

If you stay in Denmark less than 185 days within a 12-month period, you may drive a vehicle with foreign number plates without having to pay Danish registration tax.

You need to pay tax in your country of residence.

  • Your country of residence is the country where you stay for more than 185 days within a calendar year
  • If your spouse and children reside away from Denmark and you stay with them at least twice a month, your country of residence is not Denmark
  • If you reside in several countries, we may decide your country of residence.

Foreign number plates in Denmark

If you are unsure of the duration of your stay in Denmark or your country of residence, you can apply for permission to drive a vehicle with foreign number plates in Denmark. Please note that we charge a fee of DKK 400 to process your application.

Submit the following information to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen):

  • form 21.059
  • a copy of the vehicle registration certificate
  • an employment or student contract to document the duration of your stay in Denmark
  • a receipt for having paid the processing fee of DKK 400
  • a marriage certificate
  • a birth certificate in case of children (for every child)
  • a current certificate of residency

By email: Log on to E-tax (Tast-Selv) and select ’Kontakt’ (Contact) > ’Send E-mail’ (Send email) > ’Bil og motor’ (Vehicles) > ’Import/eksport (udland)’ (Import/export (abroad) > ’Biler fra udlandet’ (Foreign vehicles).

By regular post to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency:

Most important information is that it can be confiscated legally if you get caught doing: 100km/h in a 50km/h zone, 160 in a 80 zone or anything above 200 on the motorway.

and the bastards just upgraded the speed cameras to register motorcycles. :-)

Other than that, Denmark is a great country to ride a bike in.

its a 125, so that's gonna take some effort! But a good warning nonetheless. I meet people all the time who are unaware, even with all the media coverage.

Yea, with a 125, going over 100 with Denmark's wind is gonna be optimistic. But thank's for the info, i also wonder what are the law's on custom exhausts? i assume its very strict?

As long as it's not louder you should be fine. Exhausts should always be e-marked aswell, except for bikes older than the e-mark system. But the smaller the bike, the more likely you are to get pulled over for a loud exhaust. They know that small bikes aren't supposed to be loud.

What is e marking?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

SheKingOnMyGizzard at 2024-02-12 21:40:14+00:00 ID: kq54cap

The e mark system is EU certification for automotive equipment. An e-marked exhaust is an exhaust that has been tested and approved for use on the road in EU, on the specific model and year of vehicle that the certification mentions. It's to make sure that people don't buy a bike or car that meets the emissions and noise requirements and then immediately install straight pipes. Can't install it unless it's a legal exhaust with an e-mark and a certificate. Same goes for most other safety-related parts on a bike. Lights, horns, brakes, tires and such.

2-stroke 125's are like less than a % of the current 125's on the road, so theres very little chance that its one of those.

That's a good thing and upgrading/adding more cameras is also good.

Just drive within the rules.

If you live in Denmark then you can bring a foreign registered motor vehicle and use it for up to 30 days, at which point you have to register it in Denmark and pay the required taxes.

If you live abroad you can drive it here for up to 6 months as already described by u/Zedilt.
