I'm not an *ologist of any kind, but it looks like a tree knot to me

That's a burl (basically tree cancer), and any woodworker would give you their right arm for one that size.

It’s not really cancer tho. Some trees reproduce through burls, such as sequoias (redwood). The burls contain seedlings that sprout when the tree falls or spread with flooding or forest fires. photo of a redwood with a burl taken in Muir Woods, Mill Valley, CA
