Hey guys,

I am a Sikh Indian guy and I was planning to travel to the happiest part of the world with my parents. We are Sikhs and we wear a turban on our head, Is Denmark safe for a vacation for us? I plan on enjoying the Copenhagen nightlife and am worried weather my look with a turban will be safe or not even at night at clubs and bars And along with Copenhagen which other part of Denmark would you suggest is a definite must visit.

Thank you, Cheers

No doubt some people are going to assume you're a Muslim.

You might get some looks, but you'll be perfectly safe. The looks won't be based on hate or whatever, but that it's rare to see here.

I don’t usually post here (my account is used for something different), but I have to say that racism does indeed exist in Denmark, especially in the nightlife. I am a bit surprised that almost nobody in the comments address this. I don’t know about people with turbans, but I’ve heard and seen really racist things against black and middle eastern people - both in trashy and high end clubs. Not to make you worried, but just so you know to take precautions. I would not walk go out to clubs alone, if I were you. I would not walk home after being out (take a cab).

Generally, Nørrebro in Copenhagen is one of the most ethnic diverse communities, so I would really recommend this instead of e.g. Gothersgade.

I’m not saying Denmark is unsafe in that manner, but people with turbans are not that common here. And we do have some very right wing parties and extreme groups that are openly racists against people of different ethnicity. And I have to say that when I read the through the comments, I assume most people commenting on this are white men who has not experienced being part of a minority. I am a “ethnically Danish” woman and every single one of my female friends has experienced verbal harassment/assault or even rape, when going out.

I know there’s a difference between racism and misogynistic behavior, but it says something about the type of people that exist in Danish nightlife.

Thats what I am worried about because I was planning to go out solo on a weekend but looking at all the comments I feel it could get bad for me So maybe I’ll have to skip it cause after spending so much money I dont want to keep having negative thoughts. Lets see

You should be safe.

There's a Sikh temple in Vanløse, accecces by train from Copenhagen Central Station to Jyllingevej Station, and a short 5-10 minute walk. There's also a Hare Krishna nearby.

There are several Sikh in Aarhus. I shared university with a few of them (one was a really great professor) and currently share workplace with one. I never heard about any problems, although I am sure at some point someone is bound to have experienced something unpleasant. I have a feeling the biggest danger for a Sikh in Denmark is ostracisation from peers in case one decides to abandon "the ways". This is admittedly based soley on my own prejudice.

By the way, Sikhs are forbidden from drinking ;-)

Denmark does not see a lot of Sikhs wearing turban, so do expect some stares. Especially outside Copenhagen. However the stares won't be racist, just curious. Take it for it is. A Danish person coming to India wearing a pink flamingo hat will surely also get lots of stares. Again, curious. Probably not racist.
