Hey guys,

I am a Sikh Indian guy and I was planning to travel to the happiest part of the world with my parents. We are Sikhs and we wear a turban on our head, Is Denmark safe for a vacation for us? I plan on enjoying the Copenhagen nightlife and am worried weather my look with a turban will be safe or not even at night at clubs and bars And along with Copenhagen which other part of Denmark would you suggest is a definite must visit.

Thank you, Cheers

You should have no problems whatsoever. I also want to add that i think Sikhs are pretty rad. I remember a couple of years back when they had a celebration on our capitals townsquare - everyone seemed lovely and it was very enlightening learning about your practices. As religions go, I think this one stands out as being one of the better ones.

I hope you have a great trip with your parents and enjoy Copenhagen. If you enjoy art I highly recommend "Glyptoteket" right across from Tivoli; they have some of my favorite sculptures in the world.

You’ll be fine. I work with a couple of sikhs who’ve been here for years. They have never encountered any problems at all.

Just don't bring your Kirpan. It's illegal.

I live in Aarhus, and have probably seen 2 turban wearing Sikhs my entire life, so if you go to bars or clubs at night, expect some staring and stupid or curious questions.. I don't know the rules, but if possible, I would consider taking it off, or maybe wearing a smaller version, if nothing else, to avoid stupid questions..

As long as you behave, the vast majority will leave you alone, and the rest will mostly behave, though as with everywhere you will run into some bad apples. The Nordics are generally top in the world for safest places, but that obviously doesn't mean there's no dangers at all.

Most Danes are quite private people and don't like to get bothered in public, though they will generally happily help you if you need help. This may be a bit different at drinking establishments where people are a more social and laid back as that's what they're there for.

Depending on where you were going and thinking of going out to a bar/club, you could ask around on the local subreddits for cph, Århus, Aalborg, and maybe Odense (dunno if they got one) and ask if anyone maybe wants to meet up and take you to the local places, it would probably give you a better experience with a local that can take you to some neat spots etc. I guess having a local also adds some extra "protection" too.

That is a great idea, I would definitely look for a local who would be interested in meeting once my plans are confimed

If it’s a really big turban, then be aware of doors with height restrictions. Jokes aside, Denmark is mostly harmless and you are safe.

Welcome - I hope you'll enjoy your stay! I can recommend spending a day in Odense, which is about 1½ hour from Copenhagen. Let me know if you need any more advice. 😄

You and your family are more than welcome! Copenhageners, and most Danes in general, are very little engaged in religious life. You might end out with either not being noticed at all or possibly a few looks and honest questions only.

You could also seek travel advice from these guys as they might have recommendations for Sikh specific sights in and around CPH.

And if you’re into numbers this official overview (dated 2018 however) states that around 10,000 people in Denmark have direct Indian heritage. Link here - scroll down to the section ‘Ikke-vestlige indvandrere fordelt efter opholdsgrundlag 2018’. India is placed third lowest here.

Enjoy :-)

You may experience discrimination at bars. The bars I visited when I was your age usually has drunk, dumb patrons. It's not guaranteed but the place isn't completely devoid of idiots. What I'd recommend is going to rock/metal bars, as well as cocktail bars with a primarily older audience. Those are the places where people are nicest in my experience.

I don't mean to discourage you at all, but just bear in mind that stupid people also exist here. I hope you have a great trip.

Also the little mermaid is not worth visiting.

Larger cities with more probability of having encountered the odd (odd here as in few*) turban wearing sikh and the younger generation in general will likely understand you are sikh. If you go more rural on your journey be prepared that people think you are hindu. It's not that they want to offend you (if you take offence of that) but simply that many don't know better. I am late 40's and I am certain I believed throughout primary school that turban=hindu. I'm not even sure we learned about sikhs at all 🤦‍♂️

Our education on foreign cultures and religions has improved, so the younger the crowd the better they'll recognize you - I'm guessing from your post you aren't the type to get too easily offended, but it's better to know - and know why - some might "mislabel" you before hand. On behalf of all us oldies here: Sat Sri Akaal!

Oh thats good to know that younger people are aware about us as we can easily get misunderstood with others, Thank you for your warm response and Sat Sri Akaaal☺️.

I am married with a sikh, no issues at all although he dont wear turban his cousins do and they had no issues here at all. Ive seen many punjabis with turban working here as well and they usually just wear black turban.

Hi OP! Try to contact 'Sikh Ungdom' (danish Sikh youth organisation) on Facebook to hear which clubs they can recommend you :) Hope you will have a nice vacation.

Very safe. We don’t see many sikhs here, so you might get a few curious looks, that’s all.

You should be fine in Copenhagen. However, regarding the nightlife it kinda depends what part of the city and what type of bars/clubs you plan on visiting. Some bars (especially in the inner city) have a history with racist bouncers.

If you wanna steer around that I would go to Nørrebro which is the most multicultural part of Copenhagen.

Likely your worst problem will be pricing at the bars.
