Hi,

I will visit your beautiful country in May. After few days in Copenhagen, I want to visit Lego House in Billund before continuing to Germany (Hamburg). Is it better if I took the train to Vejle or Kolding from Copenhagen and then continue with bus to Billund?

Other things to consider is which city is better for quick sightseeing walking trip in the evening after returning from Billund?

I am open to other suggestions as well.

Thank you in advance.

I don’t live in Denmark anymore, and never lived around the Kolding/Vejle area, but I just looked up your route on Rejseplanen. Seems like Vejle has more frequent buses going to Billund, and iirc, the train from Copenhagen goes directly to Vejle, but not directly to Kolding. So my vote is Vejle.

Edit: I am wrong, there is a direct train from Copenhagen to Kolding, but it still seems easier to get from Vejle to Billund

Thank you for your feedback. Agree on the bus frequency, but the train to Hamburg will have transit at Kolding if I start from Vejle, and I only afraid if there is any delay for the vejle-kolding route.

But why not do Copenhagen-Vejle-Billund-Kolding-Hamburg, then?

Do you need to transit through the same station both ways?

I never really thought to spend whole day at either Vejle or Kolding, only plan as transit city to visit Lego house before continuing to Germany the next day.

Kolding is a really nice old town. In the old days it used to be where the king resided.

Then I would go via Vejle.

On the way back, go to Kolding, go see Koldinghus, have a walk by the lake, and then find a place to have dinner before your train to Hamburg.

I can only choose 1 city as i need to stop at either kolding or vejle, check in/ store my luggage, go to and return from billund with bus, stay 1 night and then continue with train to germany.

Ah, I see. Then I'd go for Kolding. There's also a few hotel options very close to the trainstation, where you might be able to store your luggage, if you stay the night.

Storing your luggage is free in LEGO House, so you could bring it on the bus and store it while you enjoy your day there, and then bring it with you to Kolding.

Koldinghus (old castle by a lake), geografisk have (botanical garden), Kolding miniby (mini town), Trapholt (modern art and design museum)

Koldinghus is within 5 min walking distance from the trainstation/busstation.

The others are a bit further out. Geografisk have might not be very interesting this time of year in the evening.

Trapholt is definitely worth a visit, if art and design is one's interest. But it requires a few hours or half a day.

Edit: Geografisk have will be nice in May.

Trapholt also closes at 17.00 (21.00 on Wednesdays), so reading the other comments of OP, making it an "after Lego house" thing doesn't really make sense, except maybe Wednesday.

Also Koldinghus closes at 17.00, but you can still walk up to it and see it from the outside.

OP, you really should consider staying longer 😉

My itinerary already pretty much locked so can only choose 1 as transit city.

Yeah go on a pizza crawl and experience why they call it slicetown.

And if you’re really lucky, you’ll get a lasting experience home with you - chlamydia

Vejle is very hilly and I find it way more attractive to visit than Kolding. Especially the surroundings. It kind of feel more like a central European town in some ways. Just my take.

There is decent transportation option from Vejle to Billund. If I'm not mistaken it goes a Bus from Vejle arrives every 30 minute at the airport in Billund, I think it stops in town too closer to Lego House.

I checked that there is bus 43 from vejle every 30 min and bus 166 from kolding every 60 min.

My consideration is the quick sightseeing after returning from Billund and the connection to Hamburg on the next day.

Bus 43 is the one I'm thinking off. I know it stops at the airport, but unsure about the city.

Can't help with anything there sorry.

Bus 43 is alright. It's a normal bus for commuters that takes a little while to get to Billund but it's the best option.

How are you leaving Billund again?

Bus to the selected transit city choice. I need to stop at either kolding or vejle, check in/ store my luggage, go to and return from billund with bus, stay 1 night and then continue with train to germany.

If you are in the area, go see a soccer/football game at FC Midtjylland. fcm.dk

It's safe.

OP mentioned, the he/she specifically will be spending a few hours in either Vejle or Kolding, and asked for help choosing which, and for what to do in that particular city. Travelling all the way to Herning to watch a football game seems completely off the table.

which city is better for quick sightseeing walking trip in the evening after returning from Billund?

Neither. Local patriotism makes people speak proudly of their home area - but the harsh reality is that, apart from the exoticism of being in a danish smalltown, there is very little those places have to offer any visitor.

Imagine going to some random US town that is far away from the nearest urban centre... Middletown, NY perhaps? :D

You can take a stroll through both cities, as the city center is located close to the train stations in both cities.

Take the train to Vejle, bus to Billund, bus to Kolding, train to Hamburg. Either way it's smartest to take the bus back to Kolding to catch the train to Hamburg, as it's not stopping in Vejle.

In Vejle also go down to the harbour and see "Fjordenhus" and the view of the fjord. Plenty of shops in the city centre.

In Kolding you can also visit "Koldinghus". Not a lot of shops in the city centre in Kolding, because they are all located in a shopping mall in the suburbs.

All public transport in Denmark can be found on Journey Planner (rejseplanen).

You can enter time, date and your destination (Lego House). It will tell you available routes.

Vejle is a nice city with some interesting architecture, there's both Bølgen (the wave) and Fjordenhus (Sea House?) And Fjordenhus is designed with some of the Lego family.
