Welcome to /c/DiWHY!

DiWHY (pronounced D-I-Why) is a community to share DIY (do-it-yourself) projects that leave you questioning the meaning of purpose and practicality. Have you ever seen or attempted a DIY project that seemed like a good idea at first glance, only to realize it was a total disaster later? Share those moments here!

These rules are subject to change at any time with or without prior notice. Therefore, you should keep an eye for changes before you make a post or comment.

(last updated: 10th October 2023 - Rewording some rules, minor updates to existing rules and introduction of Rule 7; no actual change in how the community works than it already does)

  1. This community is a part of the Lemmy.world instance. You must follow its Code of Conduct (https://mastodon.world/about).
  2. Please keep all discussions in English. This makes communication and moderation much easier.
  3. Only post content that's appropriate to this community. Inappropriate posts will be removed.
  4. NSFW content of any kind is not allowed unless it's appropriate to this community. Decisions regarding this rule are left to moderators' discretion.
  5. Do not create duplicate posts or comments. Such duplicated content will be removed. This also includes spamming.
  6. Do not repost media that has already been posted in the last 30 days. Such reposts will be deleted. Non-original content and reposts from external websites are allowed.
  7. Absolutely no discussion regarding politics are allowed. There are plenty of other places to voice your opinions, but fights regarding your political opinion is the last thing needed in this community.
  8. Keep all discussions civil and lighthearted.
    • Do not promote harmful activities.
    • Don't be a bigot.
    • Hate speech, harassment or discrimination based on one's race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, beliefs or any other identity is strictly disallowed. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to discuss in this community.
  9. The moderators retain the right to remove any post or comment and ban users/bots that do not necessarily violate these rules if deemed necessary.
  10. At last, use common sense. If you think you shouldn't say something to a person in real life, then don't say it here.

That image host sucks. I wish people wouldn’t use it.

Name alternatives that allow direct linking and I'll gladly switch.

It's file hosting BTW, you can upload anything you want.

Sorry, I am more of a content consumer than content creator so I haven’t got an alternative for you. There is a possibility it’s just my device’s setup that creates the issues but I’ve never successfully loaded a cat box dot moe file.

I didn’t mean to single you out, my frustration stems from hundreds of unsuccessful attempts at viewing. Apologies.

That's OK, I understand.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly switch. I usually browse Lemmy from my phone, so it's preferrable that it doesn't have a complicated UI and it's just straight up simple: upload, share link, done. Catbox ticks all of the boxes and it's free 🤷.

some ISPs may be blocking cat box because there's a significant amount of porn being uploaded on there, but that'll happen with any file host as open as catbox

hosting files, especially videos, are expensive (hence why most instances disable video uploads) and, if public, has a hefty moderation workload, so anything of reasonable size (and isn't personal) will end up either enshittified a la imgur or die.

and we shouldn't expect everyone to have their own webservers just to share their silly stuff on the net. this is a difficult problem to solve
