I’ve tried it and I’m just sort of meh on the whole thing. Maybe it’s be different if I had real world friends on it and it was people I knew, but trying to interact with total strangers didn’t seem to work out so well. And the idea of using a VR app only for chatting seems weird in and of itself, like I would need there to be a game or some sort of “purpose” outside of just chatting for me to really want to use it.

i don’t myself, but all my furry friends who have VR are playing it all the time
I've been interested in trying it (and/or NeosVR which is similar... I think? Not looked into it that much) and convincing friends to try it.
Anyone know what the experience is like for non-VR users?
I wish I could. I see that people do some amazing stuff with the right equipment. But I have neither the equipment or money for it nor the space. Also I fear to be too afraid to really interact with anyone even in VR.
