On August 30, 1975, Anita Lias said goodbye to her father and left her home for a babysitting job. Anita was a sixteen year old girl living in Columbus, Ohio with her parents, Alice and Moses, as well as her younger sisters, Pamela and Alicia. Anita attended Eastmoor High School and was a star on the school’s track team.

Anita was last seen walking down Avalon Place toward a store in the corner of Nelson and Broad St. Witnesses would later report Anita smiling and waving at a man driving past in a 1969 Blue Chevelle. The man was described as being black and in his late twenties or early thirties. Witnesses stated he was wearing curlers in his hair. Multiple witnesses said they had seen the man in the neighborhood before but did not know his name and he has never been identified.

That night, Anita failed to return home from her babysitting job, though it is unclear from source material if she ever arrived. Moses became alarmed and called the police, reporting her missing. Sadly, Anita would be found dead two days later.

Her body would be discovered in a garage, three and a half miles from where she was last seen. Her hands were bound behind her back and she had been strangled as well as stabbed multiple times in the chest. She had not been sexually assaulted. No suspects were ever identified and as of 2024, Anita’s case has gone cold.
