Improve The News is a free news aggregator and news analysis site developed by a group of researchers at MIT and elsewhere to improve your access to trustworthy news. Many website algorithms push you (for ad revenue) into a filter bubble by reinforcing the narratives you impulse-click on. By understanding other people’s arguments, you understand why they do what they do – and have a better chance of persuading them. **What's establishment bias?** The establishment view is what all big parties and powers agree on, which varies between countries and over time. For example, the old establishment view that women shouldn’t be allowed to vote was successfully challenged. ITN makes it easy for you to compare the perspectives of the pro-establishment mainstream media with those of smaller establishment-critical news outlets that you won’t find in most other news aggregators. This Magazine/Community is not affiliated with Improve The News and is an unofficial repository of the information posted there.

  • The UK government on Tuesday published its long-awaited draft recommendations for schools and teachers on transgender issues in England. The guidance, touted as a “parent first” approach, directs teachers to tell parents if their child wants to change gender. The Telegraph
  • The Department of Education has promised the guidance since 2018, but a draft had been delayed due to debate regarding the controversial issue. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said that teachers and students aren't required to use different pronouns and maintained that parent’s views must “be at the heart of all decisions made about their children.” WION
  • The guidance also recommends that bathrooms and changing rooms should be separated based on biological sex and that children aged 11 and above not change or wash in front of the opposite sex. It also states that single-sex schools shouldn't have to admit pupils of the opposite sex and that children under 12 shouldn't use pronouns different from their sex. BBC News (LR: 3 CP: 5)
  • While the guidance does generally warn against social transitioning — a process in which children change their names, pronouns, and clothing without undergoing medical procedures — it doesn't prohibit the practice. Independent (LR: 2 CP: 3)
  • Meanwhile, some schools have already said that they will not adhere to the non-binding guidance and will continue to implement their own policies related to pronouns and social transitioning. Some parents have reported schools socially transitioning their children without informing them. Daily Mail (LR: 5 CP: 5)
  • The draft guidance will be out for consultation for at least nine weeks before it's formally issued. Guardian (LR: 2 CP: 5)

Progressive narrative:

  • This new guidance on transgender students is actively dangerous and threatens the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. Whitehall officials are essentially telling trans students that their identities are invalid and they aren't owed the dignity to live out their gender identities. Rather than further disempowering an already marginalized community, the government should be seeking ways to support these vulnerable students.

Conservative narrative:

  • Radical ideologues have infiltrated the education system across the Western world, stripping students of their innocence and pushing a divide between parents and their children. The government is working to protect the family unit with this guidance, which, contrary to criticisms, doesn't marginalize transgender youth but rather brings parents back into the conversation. While it could be more forceful, it's a good start.

Treating the opposing views here as “spin” isn’t balance, it’s trash. All the science backs up that allowing transition is literally life-saving.

The guidance, touted as a “parent first” approach, directs teachers to tell parents if their child wants to change gender.

Bastards.

Children are not their parent's property. They're whole independent human beings, at an uncertain and vulnerable stage.

... why does this community additionally publish fascist propaganda endorsing outright bigotry? "Balance" is not what you achieve by putting victims and their attackers on equal footing. You're supposed to be biased against horseshit and violence.

Well at least its not all binding. Not much of a silver lining though.
