I'm still on a 10700k and skipped the whole Alderlake / Rapterlake / Raptorlake Refresh LGA 1700 platform. Just wondering how many Intel users out there also completely skipped the current platform and are waiting on what's next in 2024.

I mostly just game at 4K 60fps and so far for the games I play my system is still holding up really well (paired with my rtx 3090). How about you guys?

Went From i5 2500k upgraded to i7 8700k to i9 9900k same mobo then upgraded i9 12900k bit impulsive on my side from 8th to 9th Gen I'm not gonna lie πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I would. Heck on my GF's PC I just upgraded her from 8th to 12th gen. Skipping LGA 1200 entirely. On my HTPC it's 8th gen also, and I'm gonna wait for 15th gen and decide what to do with it then might go a budget end of life LGA 1700, an AM4, or 5 setup.

On my personal PC I had an r5 1600, now a 3700x, and I'm thinking I'm gonna get a 5800x3d and then skip AM5, and get whatever the first gen on AM6 or the Intel equivalent at that time. Unless something before then really compels me. Then I'll have had a motherboard last almost 10 years from 2016 to 2026ish, and hopefully can repeat that again with AM6.

The 5800x3d just seems like a great hold over until then, unless the CPU wars speed up again.

I've just ordered a 13900k system to replace my 5820k from 2015. I could probably get away with the current system for a while because I have added an RTX 4060 and NVMe hard drive, but I want to get back into video editing and the performance bump (especially with QSV) is desirable.

I went from an 8700K to an 11700K in the pandemic because I had to buy an entire system to get an RTX 3080. I upgraded to a 13600K and it's a decent boost in performance, both in games and apps. Is it necessary? Absolutely not, 8700K was still pretty awesome!!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I went from a A8-6410 to a Ryzen 3750H to a 11400H and I'm extremely happy with it. It's a tiny portable powerhouse for the price.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

8700 (not the K)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

10700f amd 3060ti @1440p. Still a great setup for me. Planning on upgrading on 15th gen. Been beating my i7 like a rented mule lately, set the lowest fan speed to still keep all core max boost clock ~95Β°C

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm on a 12900K and hoping to skip all the way to Nova Lake successor. Worst case I throw a 14700K or 14900K when they are discounted into my current board and still wait.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I just finished building dream PC. Went from i5 to i9 9900k and 1660 Super 32 ram to my new i9 14th gen 4080 128 ram. Def a noticeable difference. Still need to fix drivers until I can comfortable say she's set but all n all big difference

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Meh at 4k you can get away with even older cpu than 10700k.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Probably. I have a 10900k with a good overclock, including memory. My next move will probably be replacing my Asus ROG 2070 Super graphics card with a 4070 Ti Super. Seems like the best investment right now, with AI etc.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

If anybody wants to update, just update. I had a 10 core i9 7900k. And my computer was fast and handled all my gaming and editing and heavy workloads just fine.

But I just updated to a i7 14700k… and it is literally like 3x faster it is absolutely insane how fast it is. And how efficient it is. The refresh will keep you going for the next 10 years easily

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

only upgrade that's worth it is 7800x3d for gaming

14th 13th gen to power-hungry

I miss overclocking lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

9700k 5.1 ghz

still awesomw 2023

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

At this point there's no reason to buy a new LGA1700 if you have a working 10th or 11th gen system. Wait for 15th gen

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Im on a 10100F and a Z590 motherboard, i will buy an 11900K and keep it until the PS6 and next gen xbox are released, that is the level of performance im taking this gen.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I skipped the lga1200 already, but I might not skip the lga1700.... here's why.

See, I got the 8700k on the Lga1151 that still screams. That was even before 10th and 11th gen Lga1200 socket, then we have the Lga1700 for the 12-14th gens.

Even so, I'm debating getting the 14700k this spring to save on the money on an over inflated "new" mb socket. If you're going to upgrade a cpu, I feel that updating the mb is just part of it. With proper care and cooling, your cpu should last several "SOCKET" changes. I'm aware that doesn't have to be the case, but unless you're upgrading every year or every other year. Then, by the time the next socket(s) roll out, when I rebuild my pc, I'll have to buy a new MB anyway. Unless the mb or 15th gen cpu are a huge improvement, then I don't see the justification for spending the extra money.

They already have lga1700 socket mbs that support the ddr5, and ram is easily upgradable once ddr5 becomes better optimized. As for the gpu, they have really been the same forever, and I don't see them making a change to it anytime soon. Unless some earth-shattering hardware upgrade happens that requires the connectors to change.

Once it's time to drop the money on it, I'll do more digging and see if it's worth it, but until the 15th gen is released and tested. All the hype and everything is really just speculation until that point, regardless of how reputable the sources may be.

Still rocking a 8600k with a GeForce 660gt here! Lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

8600k with gtx1060 myself, been going for 6 years

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

On 9700k, waiting for 15th gen myself, so i can have upgrade options with 16th gen.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Still on 10900, 32gb 3200mhz ram, 3080, multiple 1tb nvme ssds playing at 1440p.

Don't feel the need to upgrade for at least another 2-3 years tbh.. unless a few games come out that i REALLY want to play.

It really depends on what games you play and how much you want to put up with the low/med settings. Atm I only play FM24 and games that don't require a lot of OOMPH, at this rate I could probably skip the next generation too. I was on an i5 4570 before the 10900

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, I have a i5-10400f and I don’t plan to upgrade anything for the next 5 years(I play on 1080p)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

As someone who had their GTX 1080 die during the pandemic and had to fork over waaay too much for a RTX 3080, I only recommend upgrading a i7 8700k type CPU now if you really NEED the performance. The next line of Intel CPUs should be a better upgrade.

I went with a 13th gen ugprade and I saw my performance double, but that was only for a few games I play. No meaningful change for the older ones.

I have a i5-13600k on the z790 chipset with DDR5 memory. Super happy with this upgrade as a relatively cheap interim solution. The cache and DRAM do a lot of work and the processor overclocks to 5.6 GHz easily.

I'm planning to get a 4070 or 4080 Super next year, because I need the RTX 3080 in another system.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

10700 and 4070 1440p 144hz. Play a mix of games but mostly mw3 fight now. Don’t see the need to upgrade for awhile. My son has 10700k 3070. I built my grandson a pc with old stuff we had so I sometimes tell myself I should upgrade so I can pass down better stuff to him lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Have i9-11900K, does everything I need it to do. People who don't need a computer for work and upgrade every year or two baffle me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm on 9th gen. Before than, I had 6th gen and a Core2Duo. I will skip until the new Core series is out (and when low latency DDR5 is common).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

My 10900k is still kicking ass.

Looking at 15th gen as my first real upgrade opportunity.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

If you not having application performance issues related to your CPU then hold off until you are

Thats basically the correct way to look at it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Runing a I-5 4670k and a 1070 going to a i7 12700kf

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

10th gen came out when?? Early 2020? That would put the earliest buyers around the four year mark in a few months. That would be the earliest they'd really need to make a jump and is in line with around the average upgrade cadence of four years.

They could look at Raptor Lake Refresh, but honestly if it were me and I had a 10900K, I wouldn't even start looking until Arrow Lake next year. A 10900K would still be a beast. Ditto with 11th Gen (though 11th gen was kind of a dud so I can see why people would want to get off that one lol).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I upgraded from 8700k and I don't want to upgrade but my pc was already asking for performance in my current work. I felt like I'm already losing money because of it so I upgraded to something I can replace in a year or two (13700 paired with b760) both are cheap and way faster. I practically saved 60% of time vs my old system. Less of a headache and more free time. Know your reasons for upgrading.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I have a retired 12700kf and I went to 14700k for my absolute newest, BUT I still game and even work with my 10850k build. An absolute beast of a cpu and honestly I just build often, my 10th Gen is still absolutely amazing and will no doubt last for more years to come.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Planning on riding my 5.2 all core 10900K straight into the ground! Does everything I need it to do and more.

One thing to keep an eye on, there's always a chance anyone on 10th gen is going to run into the occasional WHEA error so make sure your voltages are correct and make sure to run appropriate stress tests.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Still on a 10400f….yeah it’s weak and holds my 7800xt back…but prices for 1200 CPUs are still too high, and I really don’t care to upgrade my motherboard and ram.

Out of curiosity, what do you use to cool your cpu and what is your psu? (I’d be willing to buy a slightly better cpu if the price was right)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

My 10700k is overclocked to 4.9ghz all core and is cooled by a Noctua NH-D14 that I've had for like 12 years now lol. My PSU is a Corsair HX1000i that I've had since 2020.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If your on 10th or 11th gen you should be skipping to 16th or 17th gen.

Got a decent deal for a Z690 board during Cyber Monday. As "exciting" as 15th gen may be, I never really buy current gen tech anyway, primarily from a financial standpoint. 9900k is still running strong, but I can also repurpose it. The 13700k(f?) seems like a good upgrade! Especially with eyes on the 40 Supers.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

10900k 5.1ghz all core. 4090. no need to jump the gun yet. Prices are quite high for motherboards

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

10850k with a 4080. As of right now, no need to upgrade. Everything plays exactly how I want.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Heck, I skipped from Sandy Bridge all the way to AM5 now! Still waiting for parts to arrive!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm concerned the hybrid Intel/TSMC chip will have decreased stability. The 7980X looks mighty tasty though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm still on my 2600k, I'm skipping every Intel generation apparently.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

literally just upgraded from 3rd gen (i7-3820) to 12th gen (i5-12600k) a few days ago. plan on using it for at least the next 5-10 years.
