Last Podcast on the Left did a fantastic episode on the Swedish/Norwegian black metal scene around this time. They cover Mayhem and Burzum extensively - I highly recommend it.

There's a good movie about them called Lords of Chaos. Dead has a small but central role in it that's well-portrayed by Val Kilmer's son.
