We finally meet Root! Or is it Luto? The subs I watched had his name as Luto, but all the fan translations of the WN content I had always seen Root as his name. So, I am not sure if the name Luto is going to stick around or if it will become Root as time goes on. For people that have read the official LN translations, does it use Luto or Root?

We got a lot of background info this episode. Our friendly neighborhood librarian finally revealed that she knows of Makoto's parents. They used to be important people in the nation of Kaleneon, now owned by the demons. Also, her and her sister are exiled, shamed nobles from Kaleneon striving to take it back one day.

The other bit of backstory this episode was about the adventurer's guild and the guild cards. Everybody's favorite pansexual, genderfluid dragon was more than happy to explain how the guild and level system was inspired by a previous isekai'ee from Makoto's world with whom Root had shared a relationship with in the past. There was also discussion about travel between worlds and time stuff. To simplify the explanation they mostly skipped, here is the gist of what Root was saying:

  • Time travels differently between the two worlds. The current world they were in experiences time much faster. That is why some isekai'ed person from 1000 years ago in this world's time knew about video games; because it wasn't that long ago in Earth's time.
  • Trying to get back home is near impossible. Makoto has enough raw mana to likely force a spell to work to transport him between worlds. However, he wouldn't be able to control it well enough to prevent doing something like being transported into space, inside the Earth, etc.

I think this episode has laid down a lot of different narrative threads (there was also the Rona situation), and then as time goes on, the story will pull on those threads in turn. It was a dialog-heavy, world-building episode though, hopefully more action next week.

Root just makes a whole lot more sense considering his role in everything that has happened so far. Plus Luto just sounds really off.

As someone who read the WN and the Manga I don't think they did the explanation scene justice. Granted cramming all of the details into an anime would be somewhat challenging since exposition dump in moving media never really goes well flow wise.
