In the spirit of the Ancient Greek Agora, we invite you to join our vibrant community - a contemporary meeting place for the exchange of ideas, inspired by the practices of old. Just as the Agora served as the heart of public life in Ancient Athens, our platform is designed to be the epicenter of meaningful discussion and thought-provoking dialogue.

Here, you are encouraged to speak your mind, share your insights, and engage in stimulating discussions. This is your opportunity to shape and influence our collective journey, just like the free citizens of Athens who gathered at the Agora to make significant decisions that impacted their society.

You're not alone in your quest for knowledge and understanding. In this community, you'll find support from like-minded individuals who, like you, are eager to explore new perspectives, challenge their preconceptions, and grow intellectually.

Remember, every voice matters and your contribution can make a difference. We believe that through open dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to discovery, we can foster a community that embodies the democratic spirit of the Agora in our modern world.

I've seen a lot of discussion about Threads around the fediverse and I believe our main instance community has had a few large discussions about it (here's a recent one).

I didn't see an Agora discussion post, so I'm making one.

Can we all discuss our opinions on whether we want this instance to remain federated with Threads or not and share our reasons? I'd appreciate it!

I'd say to not defederate (for now), they are playing our own game so let's allow them to do so.

I, for one, have no intention of ever using Threads, and if we Federate, I'll never have to. But If most lemmy instances defederate from them, however, in a few months/years if it grows to be popular and all our family/friends use it we'll all be installing that dreadful app on our phones and be all happy pleasing our social network overlords, just like we did for other Meta protects like facebook and instagram.

Who here never had an account at some point in time? If the fediverse was a thing back in the day, we'd never had to.

Start using something because our family is using it?

Friend, you are sorely mistaken.

What I'm saying is if the only way to contact certain people is on a certain platform (this already happens with whats app and messenger) then a lot more people are going to have it, even if you're willing to ditch people who don't use open source platforms, a lot of other people won't and that's going to increase the numbers and power that platform has. I have telegram but I only talk to 1-2 people there because no one has it, if I could talk to "what's app contacts" through telegram/matrix I would not have Even an whats app account.
