Apparently, lemmy.ml already blocked Threads before Threads started using ActivityPub.
Personally speaking, I don't like it if administrators start deciding for all users on their server what they can and cannot see (although they obviously have the right to do so).
If I want to follow a community or user in Threads, why should an administrator of a Lemmy server be able to prevent me from doing that? It also sounds rather silly, as it's terribly easy to create multiple accounts on various Lemmy servers and read Threads posts that way.
Because Meta is a threat to the Fediverse and we should block everything they create or try to. They want to destroy this place.
They got 70m users in a few days. Mastodon has a few million after a year. I don't think Meta cares about us at all!
Oh care just enough to see us squashed.
Or...not at all.
Except:
Why would you want an administrator to make those decisions on your behalf?
The users who don't consider Meta a threat can find a server that won't block them. Or start their own.
Admin's website, admin's rules.
I think it sends a good message. That we don't want your corporate garbage at all. From the top down.
This will give you a good idea of which Mastodon instances will federate with Threads:
https://fedipact.veganism.social/
Just create an account at one of the instances that will federate and you're all set.
It's less effort for me to go out and block garbage. If they start blocking stuff I don't want blocked I can either migrate or work on selfhosting.
Nothing is stopping you from joining a server that federates with threads, or even starting your own.
It sounds like you randomly picked an instance, and are mad it's not the right fit for you...
And rather than put in literally 10 seconds of effort to join a new instance, you're just complaining which will accomplish nothing.
You could have joined a new instance in the time it took you to type your comment, or even just read what I just typed...
I'm not registered on this instance, so your comment is completely wrong. It's also a personal attack, but you don't even know me.
As soon as an administrator starts deciding I cannot access Threads, I obviously will move if I want to see Threads posts.
I'm quite dumbstruck however by the large amount of people that think an administrator should block a server like Threads even before they have started using ActivityPub.
My understanding is federating with busy instances increases the resources used by that lemmy server. So it’s makes sense to me that an admin blocks whatever they like. This isn’t a paid service, admins are funding this themselves or via very limited donations.
I’m not on lemmy.ml, but from what I’ve read, the majority of users there are dead set against any large corporation looking to encroach on the Fediverse. The mods seem to be following the will of the people.
These complaints make no sense. Join an instance that federated with them or make your own instance. Mods making decisions! Think of the children!
Just choose new mods. You can do that here.
This is the current list of instances blocked by lemmy.ml, you can view it on lemmy.ml/instances
