From what my Turkish friend says, you have to do it in front of military officials, doctors, and your family will be dragged into it too.
The entire thing is based around denigrating and dehumanising you.

From what my friend told me about Saudi Arabia, they have a similar mindset. With their extreme puritanical outlet, meeting women is near impossible. Being a top isn't considered being gay, but being a bottom is considered disgraceful.

Except this view has been around since ancient greece. It's not mental gymnastics at all. It's just placing more value on the bottom/top spectrum instead of the straight/gay spectrum. Not that we should be viewing anyone as disgraceful. It's not anymore irrational or any less irrational than the homophobia western societies have.
