So, you can just create one? No need to ask anybody for permission? I ask because I understand that each instance belongs to someone, and I'd be worried to create a community on someone else's... whatever an instance is, server space?

On most instances, yes! The instance owner provides server space for the community. When I was comparing instances, there were some that did not allow users to create their own communities so it looks that’s something the owner can choose to enable/disable. But no need to ask for permission if it’s enabled. I can’t find it now but one of the instances just posted a no porn rule on theirs. So you can always check your local feed to look for any relevant rules.

From what I've looked at so far, every instance I've checked has a NSFW ban, except for one instance that is specifically for NSFW communities. I think that's a great way to separate that kind of content from normal content personally
