The backlash against Taika Waititi has manifested stronger than ever with his newest Rotten Tomatoes score, raising the question of what changed.

I'd hardly call low critic scores a "backlash" based around "overexposure" - it's not like he's making Troma-direct-to-VHS movie numbers.

Love and Thunder failed because it's supposed to be a serious tone and they gave it to a comedic director, I'm not really sure what they thought would happen when they mismatched tones and direction preference.

While I enjoyed L&T overall, the tonal whiplash was crazy.

I thought L&T was so close to being a great movie, they just screwed it up with some jokes that could've been cut, show Gorr a little more, and giving the kids powers was dumb

once Thor left the Guardians the movie should've become a little more serious in general, or maybe when the kids get kidnapped

Klara and the Sun is serious as well...

There's a difference between picking a serious project to undertake and being forced into a corner by the corporate board, which is more than likely with Love and Thunder.

Did he get told to do Klara and the Sun, or did he decide to work on it? I think that makes a big difference.

I just had a quick look, sounds like the producer had the rights and had it organized with Sony before negotiations began with Waititi.
