It comes from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare where you could interact with a casket in a funeral scene by pressing F.
"Press F to pay respects" was widely ridiculed and became a meme
Yeah I've seen pics of that before but completely forgot about that lol, got answered here with a link to Wikipedia that remembered me of it but thank you!
It's not "you could". The game does not progress until you press F, which turns what may have been a somewhat somber act into just a thing you're forced to do, completely removing the little respect you may have developped for that character in the short time he existed.
I hate these pointless interaction prompts. Doesn't make me feel like I'm contributing to the scene in the slightest.
