I'm French. Just because France is not as bad as the US doesn't mean we don't have a problem. The USA is the lowest bar possible.

Though it did not start with him, Macron's anti-protest strategy, both with the Gilets Jaunes and ongoing with the retirement protests, is to basically let the police do whatever they want, and then ignore or minimize all police violence, especially via the media currently controlled by French billionaires and thus very pro-government.

Just for the Gilets Jaunes, there were some deaths sure, but also hundreds of head trauma and mutilations. The violence was condemned by Amnesty International, the UN, and the European Council.

It's actually quite exceptional that, for once, the government is condemning this killing. Probably because it wasn't related to any anti-government protest.

They are not used to potentially facing consequences:

"Policemen also have the right to be presumed innocent. [...] The president's remarks violate the separation of powers by condemning our colleagues before justice is decided. His first responsibility should be to calm things down, to condemn urban violence, and to not pass laws while affected by emotion.
[The police union] strongly condemns these remarks and completely supports our colleagues wounded during last night."

Another police union response to this murder:

"Congratulations to the colleagues who fired on a young 17yo criminal. By stopping his vehicle, they protected their lives and those of the other road users. The only ones guilty for the death of this thug are his parents who weren't fit to educate their son."
