People here will attack you for having a slightly different viewpoint than the status quo, which I can't really even figure out. It feels like a tight knit clique, and I'm not a part of it. Often times I just don't comment on things, because I expect to get downvotes and made fun of.

That’s been the opposite of my experience here on Lemmy and the exact thing I’m experiencing more and more on Reddit.

Likewise. I guess when you hang out on the equivalent of c/denofvipers you shouldn't expect a terribly friendly community. Don't like the community? Find a different one! Found your own if you have to!

From what I have seen if you explain your viewpoint people usually tell you why they disagree and you can argue with them as long as you stay respectful.

NO YOURE WRONG AND I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SAID THAT!!!

Bit aside, this has been my experience as well. Yeah, I'm a pretty argumentative person, but most of the ones I've had on here have been decently formed and thorough, without a whole lot of just raw shit slinging. There have been a couple, but it's more the exception.

I also feel way more comfortable commenting here, because of the smaller community. I feel more comfortable expressing an opinion that may be contrary to what seems to be the 'local' status quo (that is, the status quo in a specific comment thread) because I feel way less likely to get ganged up on.

It is also good that downvotes don't have as much effect as they had on reddit because your karma doesn't really mattery usually people also try to understand the opinion of someone before looking at their profile for bad arguments completely unrelated to the discussion
