If you read the article it says the saying was popularized in 2019 after a stoner YouTuber came out as gay or something
I feel like "hits different" is way older than that
If you can find the source for that, you should update the Wikipedia article
"Popularized" specifically removes the provenance.
Look there's a whole entertainment complex of entertaining Gen Z with culture that's older than them, repackaging the same jokes into short form because they don't have access to the same TV and movies. But don't let them just own these words like they are brand new.
