I think everyone volunteering to fight for Ukraine, knows this is how they might end up.

Russia can not be trusted to be civil or abide by any convention or set of rules.

Yeah, at this point they've broken so many rules of war that there aren't many left to break.

The only people bound by rules are the good guys. This is how the good guys can lose. When one side abandons rules, that should give permission to the other side to violate those rules as well. Assasination attempts on our leaders? Ok, let's do that then. Target our civilians? Let's target yours as well. Use chemicals on our hospitals? Ok. If you insist.

Russia needs to experience a bit more of what Ukraine has endured for the conservatives there to understand that war has deadly consequences.

They were being facetious, but yes. Russia is basically a huge, angry petrol station with an army.
