Would you consider a puffer jacket with a hood? The loft insulates very well and does better against wind in my experience, compared to hoodies. Although, ones that are very warm and also not bulky can be pricey.

I have to be able to fit an apron over it, but that might be an idea.. I do need a new puffer jacket though, I wore my last one until it literally started falling apart!

I used to try and wear hoodies and layer up when doing field work, but I'd never feel as warm as when I had just a thermal and a good puffer jacket on. I'd often wear a hi viz jacket over the puffer so I think an apron is doable...

Nice, I'll check out some puffer jackets and thermals as well. It makes me realise how much I've neglected my wardrobe: as things have worn out or fallen apart I haven't replaced them.
