Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I can recommend MX Linux with XFCE. Running it on my second laptop (~10 y/o). Distro is lightweight, easy to use, has x86 build. XFCE desktop environment is light on resources and also pretty customizable if you willing to do a bit of googling (or already know what you're doing) but looks just a bit outdated. On the other hand - most probably you will be able to do regular stuff like watching videos, listening to music, browsing web with no issues and with reasonable performance. Most MX Linux builds are specifically targeted at older PC.
