I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the 9ers situation last year running out of QBs. Sudfield will likely be the QB3 that won't burn a roster spot.

My takeaway was similar. The front office thinks that we now have a competitive team and the extra money for a high quality backup is worth the expense versus a potentially higher draft pick if worst comes to worst. Their saying the Superbowl window is now open.
