He stabbed a flag pole through a guy's head, on purpose, and then said, "he deserved it". That sounds an awful lot like attempted murder.

No. It actually sounds like Attempted manslaughter. There is no planning, no low motives, nothing necessary for a murder charge.

Manslaughter would imply that there was an instigation that lead to unreasonable act that's could result in loss of life. The article says the attacker charged him with the flag pole and attacked. Clearly we don't have all of the information, but unless the victim was doing something that could potentially justify an emotionally charged face stabbing, this reads to me more like attempted murder, 2nd degree since it wasn't premeditated. That and the lack of remorse isn't helping this dude's case. Either way, I think it's more than the maiming of the initial charges.

@Cap mentioned that Maiming is a felony charge in Oklahoma, with a potential for a life sentence.
