- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I had a smart watch for a bit, and stuff like this is kind of why I dropped it.
Like, it was something else I had to charge and remember to grab in the morning, and all it did for me was make it slightly faster to see notifications and gather more info on me that i didn’t really need. Like, ok, theoretically I could answer texts on it without pulling my phone out, but only by using janky ass STT that got half of what I said wrong, so I’d have to re-record 4 times and by that point it would have just been faster to pull my phone out and type out the response, and if I have to pull my phone out anyways what is the benefit of having the notifications on my wrist.
Once knew a guy who would wear a gold Apple Watch on one wrist and a Rolex on the other. I asked him why and he said “oh this one is to check my blood pressure and heart rate, and this one is because you have to have a Rolex if you want people to take you seriously in my line of work.”
I like mine but I have my phone set so that only a small handful of critical apps have notifications on and the watch basically only has notifications for messaging, email, and calendar reminders
Notifications were a great idea but apple and google ruined them by allowing advertising to fuck the whole system up. They should be forced to use their power to create a multiple lane environment for notifications - critical notifications and advertising related notifications need to have clear identifiers so I can identify them easily and opt out of what doesn’t matter to me.
They’ve instead gone with this system of allowing app developers to self regulate and many abuse it. Some give a granular system within their app to allow promotional notifications to be turned off but many do not. A lot who do silently turn settings back on with app updates and such, and after 6 months you’re suddenly getting a sea of promotional notifications again.
It trains you to just ignore notifications. Now they have AI summaries of the sea of notifications instead of just fixing the root of the problem, which is that 80% of your notifications are fucking garbage. But you can’t install an adblocker for this, you just have to stop using amazon, corporate social media, and shitty mobile games (net win though)
Advertising is cancer and ruins the world. Destroy advertising. If you work in advertising you’re a scumbag. Aaab (all advertisers are bastards)
I have a zero tolerance policy with notifications, if an app sends me even a single promotional or advertising notification, it looses notification privileges forever. Hell if it’s sending me notifications that are not directly related to why I have the app, even if they’re not strictly speaking advertisements. NYT’s lost notification privileges because it kept notifying me about opinion pieces and recipes.
I wish apps would just stop being coy with notification settings. Like it'd be cool to be notified when my eBay order is delivered. But if I just want that, I need to manually disable:
You can flip one switch to disable all, but if you want any one of them, you need to manually disable each and they're split between four sub-menus.
Multiply this by 20-30 apps because every parking garage and water fountain needs an app now, and it's a nightmare.
I carry a dumbphone now and wear a Casio.
I turned on do-not-disturb and only let text messages trough. Orders aren't just dumped in front of your house here so that's not an issue
Now do LinkedIn where I want job offers and responses to applications, but not some douchebag's take on the impact of VR on the grocery supply chain.
Set it as an exception, and then you only need to bother with setting that app properly
This is also assuming the app provides granular notification permissions. So many have just one toggle, so you're stuck with all or nothing.

Best part of this is that you can actually see the time on the rolex (or any other brand) without shaking it to death and cupping your hands around it because it’s sunny. At a lower price!

I think you underestimate how stupid expensive Rolexes can be.
My gf uses a t9 keyboard on her watch. It takes some getting used to but it works quite well. And it beats looking illiterate with voice typing
I bought a cheap xiaomi watch and I mostly use it to keep my phone unlocked, "smart lock" or whatever it's called, it means as long as the watch is in bluetooth range of my android it's just a swipe unlock instead of a fingerprint unlock. Useful when shopping. And all the other notification and clock stuff of course
