Why do people do this shit to themselves?

I swear if the Borg came down some people would be lining up to join the club.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago

I'd join the Borg in an instant.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago

If it wasn't for the whole forcing people thing, they probably would.

Their tech is much better, and you get as close to immortality as you can get, since your body is maintained by their tech, and your mind gets added to the hivemind.

Short of death, you'd never have a medical problem again.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine.

Anything breaks, we'll just replace it.

Including the brain. Especially the brain.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Borg-Garek, is that you?

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 days ago

They are tech writers, that's their job

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

my private fan theory is that the Borg are actually the good guys but we only ever hear the gReAt fEdErAtIoN's POV

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If it actually worked, it would be really useful for a lot of people (it's me. I'm a lot of people)

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, if the Borg weren't so violent towards non Borg they would be the actual end goal of a lot of nerds. You're telling me we could be socialist cyborgs in space?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

But the federation is already socialist.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

And has cyborgs

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So? Can't the Borg also be socialist? We have multiple capitalist groups right here in real life

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well sure, I just don’t know why I would join the socialist group that wants to remove free will when I’m already part of one that doesn’t.

Star Trek Spoiler

See Picard series 2 for that

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Quoting the renowned Mike Wazowski: "How many kids you got in there?"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Journalists? Probably just to see how it will go wrong and report about it so we don‘t have to.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would be lining up to become part of the Borg tbf. It's basically giga-socialism

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I don't think you understand what the Borg are about.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Fully providing every single need to their people in an attempt to create the most efficient worker possible? It just so happens that their "work" is assimilating people into the hive, but... The methods surrounding their work are pretty nice.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Amazing. Can't tell if you're joking or you are for real.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Amazing. You've yet to actually make a point in this conversation, only disparage mine without any counterargument lol

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At what point did I mention anything about the hive mind being a good thing? The only thing I praised was the fact that the hive provides homes and sustenance for its workers

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That is basically the "but Hitler built the highways" argument.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I almost feel like you're intentionally avoiding what I'm actually saying. I am not praising the Borg as an exemplar of a good society. I am saying that they happen to have one aspect that is also present in what would be a good society. In my first comment I acknowledged that what they do is not okay, and then jokingly compared assimilation to socialism because it has 2 similar properties. I oversimplified for the sake of a joke. You're being an ass for no reason over a joke about cyborgs being kind of similar to socialism. The joke used the Borg as a subject but literally any cyborg lifeform would fit the bill because the mechanical parts provide the sustenance and protection the worker needs.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean... the method is basically "join us or die"... I don't think that's particularly nice...

[–] [email protected] -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm not talking about the method they use to work, I'm talking about the methods they use to facilitate that work. They provide their workers with homes and sustenance. I would expect to put entertainment on that list too if they weren't cyborgs

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hmm, the Borg internet (or intranet I guess) probably has a lot of entertainment material collected, but then we know that drone emotions are suppressed by implants so you wouldn't actually be able to enjoy any of it...

"Homes" feels like a stretch... an alcove is worse than one of those sleeping pods in Japan, you don't even get privacy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Why are we taking this so seriously? I don't want to actually be the Borg. I want to be a socialist cyborg, and that's what I meant in my first comment

Edit: okay I totally did say "I'd be a Borg" but I meant a socialist cyborg. My bad

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Why are we taking this so seriously?

Because it's funnier that way.

I don’t want to actually be the Borg.

I totally did say “I’d be a Borg”

You seem very confused. Join the link, the Collective will bring you clarity!

I meant a socialist cyborg.

Don't let your dreams stay dreams!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago

Because it's funnier that way

I misread your tone cause of the way the other person reacted to my joke, apologies

Not with the stars though right?

Do you? The Borg are a collective consciousness, it’s the most democratic government in the galaxy.

My only problem with the Borg is they have a queen.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

Democracy isn't that everyone is being forced to be of the same opinion. They don't vote for their actions, the hive mind overrides each personality with the overarching Borg characteristics, mean assimilation of every worthy race, eradication of danger. There is no individual left in this. If you think that is democracy or socialism then I don't know what else to tell you.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

I don't think enforced conformity through literal mind control counts as democracy.
