Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

711 readers
393 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

Hi all.

First, thanks for reading. I'm not exactly sure if this is the correct location to raise a concern about a ban/deletion, but I guess it's as good as any.

So:

  1. I dont know which mod it was. Log is redacted?
  2. post deleted & banned from the [email protected] community
  3. screenshot of modlog attached
  4. screenshot of comment attached.
  5. It was an appreciated post with 106 upvotes 26 downvotes at deletion and several positive responses yesterday. When I came back today (I'm in Australia so timezones..) the comment was deleted and I was banned - and several negative comments have appeared which I would have liked to respond to.

Original post: a news article about Proton Mail.

My post: Essentially I took the time to read the article and included the quotes of what was written by the CEO that was being discussed in the article - as many in the comments had surprised me by jumping straight to him being a literal Nazi. As not a single other commenter had included the quotes to discuss the source, I thought that would be a valuable contribution. I also gave my opinions which you can see in the comment on the modlog, the formatting is messed up so I included a screenshot of the (recreated) comment. https://lemmy.world/modlog/1347

What I didn't notice was that the article writer had omitted the first part of the Twitter post from the CEO in her quotation of him - so I quoted her, and in doing so missed the context that the CEO had actually started "Great pick by @realDonaldTrump" at the start - which does of course change the context of his Twitter post to praise. This was clarified for me in the angry responses. I would have edited my comment and owned my mistake, however stood by the rest of the comment regarding Proton's official follow-up.

So, is that deletion and ban fair?

Update 10 hours later: contacted a mod directly to see if i can find out more about the ban or perhaps get it remedied.

You see my modlog as a cautionary tale. I see it as a list of my proudest achievements. I violate Rule #1 like you violated that sock last night.

… thus validating their decision to remove your toxicity from their community.

I stopped worrying about popularity when I left reddit. I'm perfectly fine with .world being a liberal shitfest. I can make fun of them for it easily enough from here.

If they weren't a den of doofuses, there would be a lot less funny shit to read in this community. I mean, what would we do without our weekly jordanlund and FlyingSquid posts?

It’s not about popularity. It’s simply about having the ability to back up your false accusations when faced with the fact that you’re a proven troll that cont conduct themselves around people who have the ability to disagree with you.

I see TONS of people with carbon copy versions of your ideology- disagreeing with people in so many .world communities. If you had an inch of credibility to your accusation, none of those comets/posts would exist.

Yet they do.

Your entire argument relies on the idea that you have behaved consistently with the rules of simple civility- and they moderated you out of the discussions because of bias. Yet your entire argument falls flat when faced with the proof of your behavior in the modlogs.

Have a nice day.

Somebody needs a hug. Come here, you!

It’s so revealing when a people relegate themselves to belittling others in conversations where their behavior is in question-

It not only means they lack the ability to authentically argue in their own defense, but that they don’t understand how closely irony weaves in and out of hypocrisy.

I’ve said all that is needed to be said here. And you’ve said all I needed you to say to prove my point and invalidate your own.

Enjoy having the last word, you!

I could argue in my own defense if I needed to. I just don’t feel like I need to. In the end, it doesn’t really matter what you think, because you aren’t the person whose rules I'm subject to.

You can form whatever opinion you want of what I say. You can even decide I’m a great person to have around. Doesn’t make that opinion of yours important.
