Fediverse vs Disinformation

846 readers
340 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

Thank you Snopes. I’m so tired of explaining the difference between a picture and a video.

Unfortunately, this whole thing worked exactly as intended. The overwhelming majority of US citizens were discussing if Musk was a Nazi while Trump signed a massive list of executive orders under the cover of media noise.

the fortunate thing is that for a few people it was a wake up call. they focused on the executive orders in ways they wouldn't have before because the action was so shocking and appalling. just… you know. not enough. but it's not nothing

That’s a bright side I hadn’t considered. Thank you for the optimism!

i've seen it in a few people

I don't get what you mean. The executive orders are very much in the news. I've seen it on every major news station. Not like it really matters because trumpers are going to trump and many others don't care either way.

snipes had to do it, but nobody actually believes they were doing the same thing. internet trolls have metastasized and are nazis… it’s the good old, “playing dumb” routine, and trying to split hairs, disingenuously, instead of getting to the subject of anything… the goal is to frustrate you and sap your energy until you give up and they get away with it.
while people are arguing whether or not the most blatant nazi salute ever was actually a nazi salute, nobody’s arguing about what to do about nazis taking over….
just filter out all talk of whether or not reality is real, and go with the facing reality type conventions
