Yeah, that's a worse version of my terrible experience with nvidia on linux. I'm sorry thats putting a sour taste in your mouth.
I will say that when I built my current computer I built it with amd for the CPU and GPU and the experience has been like butter in comparison. Everything I've used through steam has launched and ran without issue. Maybe I changed some to experimental, but I can't remember.
I also tried mint this time around, and my motherboard is too new to have built in Ethernet drivers in the mint kernel. Plus things that just worked in KDE neon just didn't work in mint.
So as others have said, it depends.
