Which was arguably the point. The ten-dollar term is "ludonarrative assonance." The blunt explanation is that MGS2 is a long-form middle finger to the player. It's not Hideaki Anno levels of dickish, but it is unmistakably Kojima looking you in the eyes and asking, "So you want another one, huh?"
It just sounds like an excuse for a somewhat poorly designed game.
None of these games lacked time, skill, budget, or thought. All of their jank is deliberate.
It served a purpose besides making you happy.
