I was under the impression that he was born George Raymond Martin and added the Richard for his pen name as a nod to Tolkien. I'm not entirely too sure what's rubbing you in the wrong way with his "fake middle initials", considering how many writers historically published under made up names.

As for the rest, it's an opinion and I totally respect it - I don't totally disagree either...
