I struggle to believe that they'd be named stinkbugs if 80% of the population thinks they smell nice. Something doesn't add up with the information you're presenting.

Just because its the same chemical doesn't make it smell the same. Try taking a spoonful of vanilla extract and you will find it does not taste like the smell. The ration and volume of the volatiles also determines how it smells.

Well that's because I didn't say 80% :) I said "to some people" and the study also shows it varies from neutral to pleasant.
